Kenmore Freezer Defrost Timer
PartSelect Number PS11723171
Manufacturer Part Number W10822278
The Defrost Timer (Defrost control) acts like a clock by switching on the defrost heater circuit after a predetermined amount of compressor run time. This allows the defrost circuit to clear the evaporator of ice or frost to maintain proper airflow. If this part is not working, it can lead to temperature increases in your refrigerator. If the compressor circuit fails, no cooling will take place; if the defrost circuit isn't activated, ice will quickly build up on the evaporator coils and reduce airflow and efficiency. If the timer doesn't advance or if the contacts have no continuity, the timer will need to be replaced. This part is located inside of the control housing on most models, and is approximately 3 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. This part is constructed of plastic and metal, and comes in white. It features 1 defrost timer, along with all necessary mounting hardware and installation instructions

The frost free feature of the freezer was freezing over with ice and cooling coils were being insulated with thickening frost which caused the cooling air to rise in temperature from -5 degrees to 20 degrees.
I troubleshot the problem by reading the electrical schematic and concluding the heating elements (defrost cables) were either defective or the bi-metal temp sensor was open. When closed the temp sensor completes the circuit for the current to flow through the heaters to defrost the cooling coils every 8 hours and then when the bimetal opens at 55 degrees the circuit is open and the coils are cooled because the refridgeration motor is in run mode. A timer between the motor and heater elements also was defective. The timer controls the cooling period and the defrost period. I ohmed out each part according to the spec sheet of normal resistance of parts and thus the bimetal and timer were defective. I gather a surge of some duration and amplitude affected these parts because a storm 24 hours prior to refridgerator problem had passsed through the area and the AC electrical power had oscillated several times during that event. I used hand tools to do the repair. If you are not mechanically inclined a step by step proceedure would be moot. It is a matter of disassembly and assembly paying close attention to fragile parts.

Refrigerator was trying to cycle compressor on, but each time the compressor started, it would stop due to the thermo breaker would open. The fans continued to run, so I figured it was starter relay.
Moved the refrig. out, removed the four screws that held the lower access panel in place. Disconnected the power cord. Removed the retainer clip wire and pulled the relays from the compressor socket. Separated the relays and installed the secondary relay on the new starter relay. Reinstalled the starter relay assembly into the compressor socket. Plugged the power cord in and listened for the compressor to cycle on. It cycled on and continued to run. Turned the power off and reinstalled the retainer clip wire. Reinstalled the access panel and plugged the power back in and left the refrig. run overnight. Checked temperature and also started the ice maker. Everything was normal by morning.

So if I buy and have a compressor replaced there was no way of knowing if the freezer would work after all that. There is a point where a person needs to invest more money not knowing that more money will fix it or not.

Not running "freezing"
This was supposed to be a new Freezer when I bought it. Freezer not running for a few years. I found out that the deicer board was burnt out. So I Replaced it and also replaced start capacitor. Right after that the compressor started BUT would not cool. After looking at the compressor I saw that some one did a real BAD brazing job to replace it. I Did not know about that till I replaced the other parts. So if I buy and have a compressor replaced there was no way of knowing if the freezer would work after all that. There is a point where a person needs to invest more money not knowing that more money will fix it or not.

Freezer just quit. Flipped rocker switch to refridgerate and refridge worked. So I ordered the Freezer control which is called "Electronic Control".
This is a convertible. You can use it as a freezer or a refrigerator. I was using it as a freezer when it suddenly quit. We have been getting some power surges lately so I guess that's what caused the malfunction. Went online and found the part I thought would fix it. (Since my part wouldn't even light up and the other control would). When the part came in 3 days later, I removed the bottom crisper bins and the glass shelf above them. Plus I removed the next shelf to allow room to remove the back panel. I also removed the shelf supports. Using a power driver I removed all the screws holding the back panel in place. Then un- clipped the wiring harness going to the controls. Then removed the bad controller. Replaced with new part and clipped back together the wire harness. Plugged unit in and set rocker switch to freeze. The unit came on and new part lit up and allowed me to adjust the temp numbers. I set it to 4. Been working great since.
