This is a mode shifter or shift actuator for models of washing machine. Mode shifters are designed to change the function of the washing machine motor, between spinning cycles and agitation, and is usually installed at the bottom of the washer. If your washing machine is not spinning or agitating during its washing cycle, or if it simply does not start, this shift actuator is likely bad and in need of replacing. This shift actuator is made mostly of plastic, and features two holes to secure it with screws, as well as a single wire harness that connects within your washing machine. This shifter is an OEM part and is sold individually.

needed mode selector, and gears replaced
year and a half old unit. The Mode selector failed to properly engage the gears and gears were grinding. O moved dryer out of area. And then turned off water, disconnected the hoses from wall. Placed hoses including drain hose into 5-gallon bucket and clamped so they would stay. I then moved washer away from wall about 2'. The
... Read moren tipped it back against wall. Used 2x4 to keep it there as a support. (Doing this allowed me to keep it in the area and not dump water on floor. Then removed the gear guard, gears and mode selector. Reinstalled all parts and packed gears with synthetic grease made for plastic. It is now working like new. Parts were exact match. Took 30 minutes. Also cleaned the dryer vet line while I had it apart.

What is the purpose of the mode shifter

How do I test the mode shifter. The washer made a plastic grinding noise while getting started on bulky items with washer set to deep fill. There were 6 XL towels that were pretty heavy. It made the noise after filling. I then set to DRAIN/SPIN , it pumped the water but didn't spin. The motor turns free and the clutch seems engage when turned by hand. the drum turns when the clutch is engaged.

Hello Jeff, thank you for your question. You can check the mode shifter by removing the front panel of the top loader -- by depressing two clips between the top and front. If you see the inner tub moving during the wash cycle, the shifter coil could be faulty, which you can check with an ohmmeter and decide whether to replace the coil or the motor. Machine made grinding noise. The bottom belt feels gooey and looks to have oil on it. I think I may need a clutch and belt but how did the belt get oily?

The grease can leak and make the belt gooey and cause the washer to make a grinding noise. We recommend replacing the clutch, part number PS11729473, to fix this issue. Would not wash or spin replaced drive belt washed one load now will not fill wash or spin

To fix this issue, we would recommend checking the following parts: lid switch assembly, part number PS16554755, water inlet valve assembly, part number PS12726768, selector switch, part number PS16217193, and mode shifter, part number PS16554752. Hello Kimberly, thank you for your inquiry. The most likely cause for a washer to return soaking wet clothes is a drain hose problem. Check and clean the drain hose, it may be kinked or blocked. Make sure you are not overloading the washer. Also, make sure the dryer is spinning fast enough to wring out the clothes properly. If this is not the issue, we would recommend checking the drain pump, part number PS12723115. We hope this information is useful!
Washer will not fill- just a few sporadic spurts and stops then just clicks. Putting it into service mode: the washer WILL fill properly during pressure sensor test. Recirculate pump test results just in clicking. Drain pump test works properly. Spin, Recirculate and Agitate tests all fail, machine just clicks and clicks. Stops for a while then clicks again. Is this a Mode Shifter issue?

My top load GE washer will spin but not agitate. I replaced the auger and lower base part to auger. I also replace the belt at the bottom of washer.
