What causes a loud whining noise
For model number PEB9159DJ2BB
Hi Sandy,
Thank you for your question. If you are hearing a loud whining noise coming from your microwave, you will need to check both the magnetron and the diode to see if they have shorted. The magnetron is part of the high voltage circuit that provides the microwaves that cook the food when the microwave is in use. To access both the magnetron and the diode, unplug the microwave from the electrical outlet and remove the cabinet. Before touching these parts, you will need to discharge the high voltage capacitor to prevent an electrical shock. Here is a link from our website that you may reference for information on how to discharge the capacitor, https://www.partselect.com/Microwave+discharge-capacitor+repair.htm. Once you have discharged the capacitor, locate the magnetron and disconnect the two attached wires and the mounting screws to remove it. If the magnetron is fine, check the high voltage diode to see if it has shorted. We hope this helps! Good luck with the repair!
