Stove heat was inconsistent and
After turning off the circuit breaker, I removed the elements and pans, raised the top and cut the wires to the receptacle assembly. Stripped the wires, slid on the shrink tubing and applied the wire nuts. I used a hair dryer rather than a match to shrink the tubing. Reinstalled the drip pans and inserted the elements. The instructions were clear and the project was easy. The stove works like new.

Oven not working
There were no flames when I turned the oven on, so the first thing I did was narrow down the problem through the process of elimination. It was really a fairly simple system to work on. I verified that it was getting power to the hot surface igniter (which it was). You can check this visibly by seeing if it heats up and glows, but that is not enough. You also have to make sure the igniter is drawing enough amps to open the oven safety valve ( about 3-3.5 amps). You do this by leaving everything connected and turning the oven on as normal. You clamp the Amp Meter (a clamp style Amp Meter works best)to the wires going into the Hot Surface Igniter and checking amperage. If the amperage is to low then the igniter is not pulling enough to open the valve and you should replace it. If the amperage is as it should be then the valve is not opening. The next thing is to turn off the gas to the appliance and unplug the electricity before starting any other work. I removed the oven racks and bottom decking out of the way so I would have room to work. I removed the oven burner to get to the oven safety valve, which is held in by two screws. I disconnected the gas line coming in to the valve using an adjustable wrench, removed the two wires (noting their position) and removed the two screws with a phillips head screwdriver. I replaced the valve with a new one and hooked everything back up in reverse order. That was all there was to it. I also replaced a couple of burners on the top of the stove while I was at it, only because they were difficult to light sometimes. They simply twist out counterclockwise and have two wires that you can't get confused because they have different size connectors and will only go on one way. This 10 year old stove now works like a new one.

Gas burner head on stove top rusted out producing blue flame where there shouldn't be
Removed stove top module and unscrewed the bottom panel. Burner head rotated out fairly easily. I ordered both the burner unit and the igniter just to be safe even though the old igniter still worked. I used the other module as a guide to reassemble the unit. The new burner head was little difficult to rotate back in and did not rotate quite as far as the original so the gas pipe was just a fraction out of alignment but there is some flex so it worked out OK when it was re-installed. Everything worked perfectly when I turned on the burner and there are no gas leaks and no blue flames where there shouldn't be!

Jenn-Air Cooktop Sealed Burner Cap With Electrode
If the gasket under the burner has disintegrated, don't worry about it. They don't offer replacements for them because they're not necessary as a safety feature. They were designed to keep overspills from running under the cooktop, but the ridge around the hole is likely higher than you'd ever need. Read more...
PartSelect Number PS11741733
Manufacturer Part Number WP3412D024-26
This burner cap assembly is sold with the spark electrode igniter and has a 7-inch outer diameter. This manufacturer-approved surface burner is for gas ranges. The surface burner supplies the heat to a cooking area on the cooktop. You may need to replace your burner cap if the gas igniter glows but will ignite the flame, the range will not start, or if you can smell gas. Because a faulty burner cap could lead to a house fire, it is recommended that you replace this part as soon as you realize it is faulty. Remember to unplug the range, turn off the gas, and let the unit cool down before starting this installation.
Note: this part has been redesigned and no longer requires a gasket, and is sold individually.

A burner wouldn't spark strongly enough to light the gas.
Replacement of these burners is very easy. You just twist the burner counterclockwise a quarter turn and pull it out. (You may need a big wrench if the range is very old.) Once out, just pull the two wires off and push them onto the new burner. Crimp them on with pliers if they're loose -- mine were. Twist the burner back on.If the gasket under the burner has disintegrated, don't worry about it. They don't offer replacements for them because they're not necessary as a safety feature. They were designed to keep overspills from running under the cooktop, but the ridge around the hole is likely higher than you'd ever need. Read more...
