Gear teeth stripped out on both timer knob & timer.
Super EZ repair. The replacement parts were spot on perfect. I removed 3 screws, slid the panel off, removed a wiring harness, the reversed the procedure. I used a set of needle nose pliers to slip the locking ring on the knob, and Bob's your uncle, all done.
Remove the knob. This is the hardest part. To remove the knob, unplug the washer and pull the unit out so you can get to the back. Stand on the right side of the machine and pull the knob out. It is retained by a nylon clip. Take a small flathead screw driver and use it to push the clip up from the open ended side. Not much force is
... Read more required. It will pop right up. The clip has a hook on one side so if you try to remove it with needle nose pliers (like I did the first time) you will bend the trim on the knob and likely break the clip.
Once the knob is off, remove the dial with the pointer on it and set it aside.
With this done, remove the three hex screws on the back of the control panel. Then lift the plastic control panel up, then forward. This will allow you to lay the control panel on the top of the machine.
Remove the wire harness by lifting up on the retainer and pulling on the harness. Grip the harness not the wires. The harness seats with a good grip so you'll need to work it a little.
Remove the single retaining screw that holds the timer unit to the control panel. Once the screw is removed TWIST the timer unit to remove it. The timer is held in place by two retaining "prongs" that you will break off if you try to pull the timer off the control panel. Once free of the retaining prongs, the timer is off the control panel and you are ready to replace with the new one.
Install is the reverse of what you just did.
When you get to putting the knob back on don't forget to put the dial with the arrow back on first. This only goes on one way but it takes a pretty good push to get it to seat. Next, put the nylon retaining clip on the knob such that it's barely on and slip the knob on the timer post only to the point where you see the slot in the knob and the slot on the post line up. When the two slots are aligned, use the blade of the flathead screw driver to push the nylon clip into place.
Reseat and align the control panel, replace the three screws, plug the unit back in and you can watch the game while the little lady gets back to her washing. :) Just kidding ladies.
This is an easy repair that anyone can do with only a couple hand tools and a little patience. Getting the knob off is the hardest part and a little finesse will work better than brute force.

Last time it was used, tenant said it filled but would not advance. They emptied it by hand and stopped using it. The control knob spins freely either pushed in or pulled out.I took the control knob off and found what looked like broken off teeth on the plastic shaft which meets the knob. I can easily rotate the plastic shaft with pliers but the knob has no way to control the shaft. What do i need?

Thank you for the great questions. From the sounds of it, you will need to replace your control knob. That would be part number: PS1482286. However if you still are having problems with the machine advancing into the cycle, you might also have to replace the Timer.

Hi again. It’s not the clip that holds the timer knob on. The broken plastic piece is under the compression ring (?) that is under the timer knob. There is a metal shaft that the timer knob fits on (that is connected to the machine) and around this shaft is a plastic ring? Gear? That the timer control knobiiks like it needs to engage with to work. Will replacing the timer take care of this? Thanks! D

When I start any cycle, the machine will not advance. I can manually turn the dial and it will spin, rinse, and evacuate water. Occasionally, in the cotton cycle, it will wash a load completely without my assistance. Do I need a new timer?

Thanks for your question. Prior to replacing the timer, we would recommend testing the lid switch and the water inlet valve with a multi-meter to check for continuity. Replace either of those parts if they are not showing continuity. If they are both intact and testing well, consider replacing the timer.

Hello Ralph, thank you for writing. This may be due to a faulty Triple Water Inlet Valve, part number PS1482391 for your model. You may also want to consider the Pressure Switch, part number PS1018030 as the cause. Good luck with your repair!
