Problem was not the pin as I'd anticipated.
The planetary gear assembly was coming down. Internet research suggested it was the retaining pin. In fact the planetary gear assembly was falling off the shaft. I cleaned it up and super glued it; all is working fine now. If it fails again, I'll replace the planetary gear assembly. Easy repair. Glad I bought some grease too.

Planetary Pinion Gear Assembly had dropped down
The repair was easy, I only had to order new gear assembly parts and to replace the associated worn parts (shaft, pin, and gears).
Worm gear had stripped so changed out several gears and parts
Opened the gear housing and removed all gears. Cleaned out all grease. Biggest issue was getting the retaining ring; very tight. Gears were difficult to pull easily. Took it apart, found stripped gears, a common problem. Reviewed parts diagram on your website. Got the parts, reviewed the diagram, removed defective parts, used retaining ring pliers. put it back together, put new grease in, tried it out. Very easy fix
The parts I received from PartSelect were higher quality than the original parts. The bevel gear and housing were originally plastic. The new ones are solid metal. The machine sounds and runs better than it ever did. The drawings from the website made this really easy. This will be my first choise for parts from now on.
Removed the lid of the mixer. Cleaned all grease and removed the worm gear. Installed new gear and packed with new grease Installed lid and checked worked perfect. Easy repair.
The mixer started getting weak like a gear was stripped and then quite working all together.
I removed the decorative band that covers the seam by removing 1 screw. I then removed the top portion of mixer by removing 4 square head screws. You will then see the gear housing in the front of the mixer. Remove the 4 screws holding that on. There are no spring that are going to pop out and you never know where they went, but be ca
... Read morereful because there is a lot of grease and a gear that it just laying in there on the right side. You will see the stainless shaft with a couple on gear cogs on it. Remove the retaing spring from the shaft and pull the top gear off, it may be a little snug. You will then see the dowel pin, mine was sheared off but I could see where it was. Be sure to remove the broken pieces. Use the punch to knock out the remaining pin. Replace with new pin making sure it is evenly exposed on both side of the shaft. Replace the top gear, then the retaining spring, the the gear housing cover, then the mixer top cover and finally the decorative band. Be sure to unplug before you start. These mixers are expensive and expensive to have someone fix them. I ordered 2 pins because shipping is a little high and the pin is cheap. I fixed this for $17.00 total and have a spare pin.

Does the retaining pin (#22 on diagram sheet) protrude out from the spindle?

Looking for a replacement pin that fits the shaft where I attach the beater. The pin on the beater shaft keeps falling out into the bowl while mixing dough.

Hello Susan, Thank you for your inquiry. This is the pin that goes into the center of shaft. We show the part PS11746933 would be the pin that would hold the planetary onto the main shaft. We hope this helps you.
Hi Jack, thank you for reaching out. To put the pin back in, line it up with the hole in the center shaft and push it in and make sure that it is centered so you have an equal portion on each side of the shaft. Once you have it in place, make sure that you lift up on the mixer housing and push down on the center shaft so it goes down and locks into the little cutouts on each side for the dowel pin. After a 10 min bread dough knead with the hook attachment, the hook stopped spinning, but I could hear the motor continuing to try. How do I know if it's the worm gear or something else?

Thank you for your question. If the dough hooks will not rotate we would recommend checking the worm gear and drive, and the retainer pin. You will need to dismantle the mixer to verify which part is causing the issue. We hope this helps!
