Compressor Start Device and Capacitor
★★★★★
★★★★★
(21)
PartSelect Number PS8746522
Manufacturer Part Number W10613606
This includes both the run capacitor and the start relay. The capacitor helps the compressor kick on and off while maintaining a constant temperature to keep things frozen in your freezer. The start relay boosts the compressor, and then shuts off as soon as the motor gets up to speed and the overload provides extra protection against excessive temperatures.

The compressor would not run.
I removed the screws in the lower back panel where the compressor is located. Then I unplugged the capacitor and plugged the new one in. I then checked to see if the compressor would start. It wouldn't so I replaced the overload relay with capacitor and that fixed the problem. The capacitor just plugs into the relay then plugs into the compressor. There are several screws but all in all it is easy. Read more...

Ice Dispenser "round chute" broken side tab, ice/water fountain not working
I could see that a tab was broken from the round chute that opens for ice dispensing and closes to seal off freezer ice chute when not in use. With the tab broken, the round door would not shut to seal the freezer chute and dispensing water would spatter everywhere. I looked for just the round door part, but is only sold in the "Ice dispenser solenoid and door kit" I only had to use the round chute/flap from the kit. The instructions were easy to follow and I had the fridge back working in about 10 minutes. It took me longer to find the right star headed screwdriver that I needed to remove the Maytag star screws (5) total. Because I didn't have to replace the solenoid or the spring mechanism, this was especially easy, and now I have those parts on hand if one day I need them!! Read more...

Fridge thawed - Compressor cycled on briefly then cut off
I rolled the fridge forward and removed the cardboard backer plate. Listening to the the compressor click in failed attempts to start, I was hoping it was just a failed relay.

I unplugged the fridge, took a photo of the wiring and removed each wire from the relay. Removing the relay from the compressor took some effort. (Pull hard or pry loose with a screw driver as it is a snug fit.) Shaking the failed part gave the sounds of a baby's rattle so ordered the replacement kit.

The parts received were quite different that the original. Rather than a modular plug, the kit consists of the two components a wire jumper and a large plastic housing. Perhaps there will be less heat build up and this will last longer.

The directions were straight forward, but the black & white photos had little contrast and some details were hard to make out. The wiring color scheme in the instructions did not match my unit. Checking the on-line wiring plans confirmed that it had also been missing a ground wire to the compressor all these years -- yikes! After plugging in the two components to the compressor and connecting the wires and adding a ground, I aligned the plastic housing over the connections. The cover did not snap into place with any authority, but appears to be secure.

the ice/water actuator switch burnt out and was stuck on.
Removed the rubber cover over the actuator switch. Used a screwdriver to remove the switch, disconnected the wires. I then removed the switch from the mounting bracket using a small philips head screw driver. Installed the new switch on the mounting bracket then installed the switch onto the freezer door. The only difficult part was installing the rubber cover. Now I just need to repair the damage to my hardwood floors and carpet from all the water. Read more...

Replaced these items to upgrade refrigerator. Also replaced ice maker, water valve and condensor fan motor and blade. Replaced worn or broken shelving parts. Total cost was worth the effort for the quality of finished product as compared to what is on the market today! Read more...

Fridge ice/water dispenser would not stop after releasing actuator pad.
Since I wasn't sure if it was the Actuator Pad or Limit Switch, I just ordered and replaced them by following both repair videos posted on Parts Select website. Videos are exactly correct and SPOT ON! It's a very simple job! BTW: My wife is actually kinda mad I fixed it, she wants new appliances. But I gotta tell ya, the repair parts and instructions on website are so available and thorough, I really can't get rid of them! Too easy to fix and keep. I've used this site to fix my fridge, oven, and dishwasher. This site is the BEST! They've saved me hundreds of dollars in repairs and broken parts showing me the correct way to take them apart! Thank you!!! Read more...
