Ice builds up on the trough at the back of the freezer then spills onto the freezer floor and eventually onto the kitchen floor. Any idea as to the cause?
For model number KBFS25EWBL9

Thank you for the question. It sounds like the P-Trap might be blocked or needs to be replaced. The p-trap drain tube kit may also be known as the duck bill, or the drain pipe. The above Whirlpool refrigerator is leaking water under the bottom freezer door. I saw on you tube that it is probably the defrost drain duck bill. Will the p tube drain kit work? Also do i need to defrost the refrigerator to do this?
For model number GZ25FSRXyy2

Hello Larry, thank you for your question. Yes, the P-Trap Drain Tube Kit
PartSelect Number: PS8691807 will work with your unit. You don't have to defrost the unit to replace the P tube, but we would recommend defrosting the unit to be sure the majority of the frost is gone in the unit. I hope this helps!

My bottom freezer was getting ice buildup in the bottom, as i was unaware of your company i ordered an update kit on line which did not fit. The problem being that the drain tube at the top has a small ring around it about 1/32 in dia. While i could get the nylon tube adapter over it the drain itself will not fit over the larger diameter created by the ring and fit to the top. I was going to order one from you but want to be sure i won't have the same problem. In comparing both drains on line they seem identical.Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
ed
For model number Maytag # MBF1953YEB3

Hi Ed,
Thank you for your question. The part number listed under your model number for the drain tube kit is PS8691807. If the there is ice buildup at the drain tube, there is likely debris in it preventing water from draining. The water will pool on the floor and then freeze. The drain tube will need to be either cleaned out or if it is damaged, it will need to be replaced. To place an order for the part you may order it either online, by visiting our live chat sessions, Monday to Friday from 8AM to 4PM EST, or by calling our customer service line at 1-888-738-4871 and anyone will be happy to assist you. We hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day.

There is ice build up on the bottom of the freezer, which eventually leaks onto the floor. Will the new drain tube with the "p" trap fix this problem? Thank you.
For model number 10672003010

Hi Philip, thank you for your question. It could if that is what the issue is. When you are having temperature problems in your fridge, there are a few parts that could cause the issue. You can use a multi meter to test most of the parts. Make sure you cut power to your appliance before doing any repairs or tests. First you should test your defrost thermostat. Place the thermostat in ice cold water for 2-3 minutes after removing it from your appliance. It should be reading 0 ohms to be working correctly. Another part to check would be your defrost heater. Remove it from the appliance. It should be reading anywhere between 0 - 50 ohms to be working. You could check your temperature sensor. To find the correct reading for this part you will have to refer to your tech sheet that comes with your appliance. You can usually find this tech sheet behind the bottom grille of your fridge on either the right or left side. These are the most common parts that cause this issue in your appliance. So it is suggested you check them first. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.

leaking water onto floor
replaced the poorly designed "duck bill" drain with this P trap. Very simple repair done by accessing through the back of the refrigerator. The video on this website walked me right through the repair. It did however fail to mention that the ice has to be removed from the inside. I had to remove the drawer face and pull outs. Then the ice maker and back panel are removed. I used a heat gun and screwdriver to chip and melt the ice build up. If one had the luxury of having another refrigerator to move food in to you could just unplug the unit until the ice melts.

I followed the video provided by Part Select. I also let the refrigerator stay unplugged overnight with all the doors open. This p-trap kit has fixed the leaks out of the front of the refrigerator. There is no ice build-up in the freezer. Perfect!

The frost free drain behind the freezer compartment clogged and water collected in the bottom of the freezer and eventually came out the door on the right front of the refrigerator.
The other instructions and the video provided by Parts Direct are pretty good with instructions, but they omit two steps. First, if you have an ice maker, you will need to unplug the connector on the back side of the panel you remove at the back of the refrigerator to access the drain tube. Just unplug it and you can move the removed panel to the side without disconnecting any of the water lines. Second, the instructions say to just reconnect the "bottom end" of the new p-trap drain to the drain pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. They don't tell you there are two places to connect the new p-trap to the drain pan. The original tube/trough connected to the one at the back of the drain pan on the left (viewed from the rear of the refrigerator). At first, it looks like the new p-trap won't reach to it for the connection, but if you look closer, there is another connector to the right of the original one that the p-trap connects to properly. Replacing the drain trough with the new p-trap was actually pretty easy and would only take about a half hour. Add another half hour to give the refrigerator coils a good cleaning as they will need it now that you can reach them. The real time consumer, 3 to 4 hours, is needed to use a hair dryer to melt and clear the ice from the condenser at the back of the freezer so the water can drain. Just take your time and all the ice will eventually melt and drain out so the new p-trap will work properly.

Easy repair but a critical instruction from the video is missing
The P-Trap replacement did solve our freezer leaking problem eventually, however, we almost ended up unnecessarily replacing the ice maker because the freezer continued to leak after we replaced the P-Trap. After much searching through other you-tube videos, we found one that advised that prior to replacement of the P-Trap that the freezer be completed defrosted and all ice removed, which was not discussed in the repair video on the website. We had removed the ice that had accumulated in the freezer bottom, but it would appear that an ice dam had built up behind the rear vent in the freezer cabinet (where we couldn't see it) and near the P-Trap and was not allowing the water to go down the trap. Once we ensured all of the ice was removed, the P-Trap performed as advertised. Also, it was difficult to get the new spacer onto the stub that extended into the lower compartment and we found that just a bit of Vaseline on the inside of the spacer made it easier to install.

Great
We install the part using the video and so far it has addressed our freezer issue. No more water leaking from the frontside of the freezer.
Ron H - August 19, 2020

fast delivery and the exact part as needed
Part came quickly, was exactly as described, and was installed very quickly and easily.
The video on the Part Select website helped very much.
Craig B - August 19, 2020

Part delivered as advertised, easy install and solved problem.
I went to PartSelect to purchase a replacement for the ice maker which I thought was the cause of the water in the bottom of the freezer. I decided to take their trouble shooter and it said that the problem was the P-Trap Drain. I read other reviews and their experience mirrored mine. I bought the kit and after a very easy install the problem is repaired. Great experience.
ANDRE S - July 23, 2020

Part received as described - didn't resolve issue
Part was received and fit exactly as shown in the installation video. Unfortunately, it was not the cause of ice accumulating in the bottom trough of the freezer compartment. Troubleshooting still in progress (while using a hair-dryer to thaw and remove the ice sheet build-up every 3-4 days on a $3000 8yr old KitchenAid frig... unsatisfactory!)
Baldev M - July 8, 2020

Correct Part
The instruction video was excellent. I had no trouble replacing the part. It was the correct part for my Refrigerator.
Although I did have to go through the deicing procedure, before the refrigerator stopped leaking water onto the floor.
Joanne S G - May 21, 2020

Whirlpool freezer stopped
Defrosting We has ice on the bottom shelf every few weeks Called and described the problem. The woman who answered knew immediately what I needed. Shipped promptly They told us what video to watch to learn how to install it. Great!
Donald F - March 13, 2020

Repaired worked.
Everything is working great.
Benjamin K - November 21, 2018

Works great
Works well, simple install. No idea why the old design was the way it was, this should be much harder to clog than the duck bill.
MARLENE K - October 6, 2018

Easy repair
The part arrived quickly and was very easy to install, I ordered online and after I finished order I realized I had made a mistake on order, I called number on the email confirmation I had received and they helped me fix my order, was very very polite and helpful, Thank you so much!
