This refrigerator defrost thermostat will cut out at 55 degrees Fahrenheit and kick back in when the temperature drops to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The thermostat itself is a little over an inch long while its extending wires are almost seven inches long.

Part fit exactly as described, great!
Watched the video and figured out with the evaporator freezing up, every five days, it was the defrost thermostat. The old thermostat was bulging, just like other people described it. Video helped greatly, saved me from a repairman, or worse, a new fridge. $45.00 part and I'm good to go!
Thanks PartSelect!

Easy to install but didn't fix problem.
The part arrived reasonably quickly. The installation video on the PartSelect website was very helpful. After testing the part, it didn't fix the problem of "Fridge too warm (55 deg F). So, I purchased and installed the Defrost Timer Kit but the issue didn't improve. I'm not sure what to do. (NOTE: The Condenser Fan Motor seems to be running.)

Once I removed the contents of the freezer I found ice on the inside back panel Removing the panel I found ice on the cooling coils and the defrost thermostat was bulged out where the wires were attached.I removed the panel with the nutdriver as shown in the video. I removed the ice maker connection and removed the panel from the freezer

The defrosting took the majority of the repair time - the actual Defrost Thermostat replacement only took about 20 minutes once I could get to it. I spliced the wire with a crimping tool as discussed in the video. Once all was defrosted I reversed the operation.Overall, a very simple part change out. The video was extremely helpful - if nothing else to mentally prepare me for the task.

Freezer, (bottom unit) frosted/froze up blocking cool air to top fridge. Found timre andc thermostat bad.
Used information on internet as to how to check and repair unit. Replacement thermostat to resolve auto-defrost issue / Hot connector did not match.
I used the original connector from the spent thermostat and waterproofed the connection with a 16g wire nut and electric tape. Works great! In hindsight I would have ordered the part earlier as this is a typical solution to a freezer frosting over. Manual defrost is a pain!

Bottom freezer compartment frosting over
Followed advice from some forum posts here to replace Defrost timer and/or bimetal thermostat. First started with the defrost timer, but the freezer frosted over again. Freezer coils icing; High temp in frig section
Noticed that defrost sensor on freezer evaporator coils ruptured and defrost timer not working -- refrig running constantly. Replaced both sensor and timer. Refrigator working properly now.
I checked your web site for similar problems. Most were the bimetal defrost thermostat. Some had defrost timer problems. Althought my bimetal thermostat was deformed by the ice I replaced both parts. The fix was easy after defrosting the evaporator. By using the spec sheets I found the locations and replaced the parts. The refrigerator is

If the thermostat is not working will that cause the coils to build up with frost?
For model number BG21VW-P1321501WW
Hi Steven, Thank you for the question. If the thermostat is not working this could cause the frost build up. Hope this helps!

Does bimetal defrost thermostat control anything other than defrost heater? When I defrost it the fan starts
For model number SCD25N2L
Hello Alex, Thank you for the question. This bimetal thermostat senses the temperature from the evaporator. When the temperature reaches 50-70 degrees (F) the defrost bi metal turns the defrost heater off. Hope this helps, good luck with this repair!

My problem is the freezer is not keeping things frozen but the fridge keeps things at a good temp. Thank you for the quick response to my earlier question. Now i have located the defrost thermostat and it was completely incased in frost/ice. The rest of the coils were clear of any frost. I checked the operation with an ohm meter and the thermostat seems to be working properly. So i defrosted it and put it back in place and will see if that was the problem. Do you have any other suggestions to try? All fans work, the compressor cycles and i have checked the defrost timer and the start capacitor and they all seem to be working too. Thanks for the great help so far.

Hello Darrell, thank you for writing. Besides the parts you have mentioned, you may want to consider either the Freezer Door Gasket part PS11738527, the Cold Control Thermostat part PS10062758, or the Defrost Heater part PS11738226 for your model. We hope this helps.

To replace the bi-metal thermostat in this refrigerator, it appears i need to have full access to the back panel in the freezer area. Doing this would be made simpler if i can remove not just the trays that hold the food and ice but the freezer drawer itself. I don't see how to do that. How does one release the drawer slide rollers to enable removing the whole drawer?
For model number ARB2117BS
Hello Dennis,
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately there is no way to do that. You would have to remove your freezer drawer.
I hope this helps!

I have ice build up in the freezer. Almost an inch of ice per month. Will the bimetal defrost thermostat will fix my problem ? Or is it a leak somewhere that cause ice build up in the freezer ?... i have no ice maker on the refrigirator.
thanks
