Compressor starts, but immediately kicks off. Is it likely to be a switch?

Hi Tom, Thank you for your question. If the compressor starts and then shuts off the thermostat in the refrigerator may not be set correctly. Try the thermostat on a lower setting to see if the compressor will start and stay on. If it does, the compressor is working normally. You should also check the refrigerator's power cord. Sometimes a worn or damaged power cord may cause a short and cause the compressor to cut out too soon. If it shows any of these signs, replace the cord. If there is any dust or dirt on the coils, this can prevent the refrigerator from working correctly. The coils should be cleaned on a regular basis. If there is ice buildup on the coils in the freezer section, the ice will need to be removed as this will also prevent the refrigerator from working as it should. You should also check the start relay. It may be faulty and if it is you will need to replace it. The start relay for your model, part number 501499900403, has been discontinued by Whirlpool and you will need to contact them for information on a replacement part. Their telephone number is 1-866-698-2538. If they provide you with a part number for the replacement part, you may call us back with it and we can verify if we have it available for you. You may also be able to locate the part you need by trying the following: Using a search engine to type your part number and see if other retailers still have this part in stock. Visiting online stores such as eBay and finding sellers that have this part. Trying retailers and repair stores in your local area to see if they have the part in their inventory. Talking to a local repair technician, who may have the part you need, or may be able to repair your existing part. We hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!
