how can you tell if water valve is not the problem but electrical
For model number FRS26KF6CB0
PartSelect logo
Hi Joseph, thank you for the question! To check the water inlet valve for electrical failure, access the refrigerator water valve found at the bottom rear of the refrigerator cabinet. Use either a digital or an analog multimeter to check the continuity of the valve solenoid coils. The steps for checking the continuity are: 1- Disconnect the water supply line connected to the valve and disconnect the wires from the terminals located on the solenoid coils. Each coil will have two terminals. 2- Set the multimeter to the lowest Ohms of resistance setting, and make sure the meter is calibrated properly. 3- Place a probe on one of the terminals, and place the other probe on the other terminal. Do this for each solenoid coil. If the meter measures infinite Ohms of resistance, the display on a digital meter does not change much, or the needle on an analog meter does not move, the valve has no continuity and is faulty. To check the valve for a mechanical failure, you should: 1- Disconnect the water supply line from the water valve. 2- Place a bucket under the end of the water supply line. 3- Turn on the water to the supply line and check the flow. If the water flow seems weak or sporadic, the problem is with the water supply. A strong, steady flow could indicate that the water valve has become restricted or clogged. If the water valve is found to be faulty, either mechanically or electrically, then you may need to replace the water inlet valve, part number PS7784018. We hope this information is useful!

water leaking out of refrigerator
In my specific appliance the water valve is located in the bottom right hand corner looking at it from the back. To get to it I remove the thin layer of cardboard the covers the back of the fridge. I then proceeded to disconnect the 1/4" copper tubing which is the water feed coming out of the wall. Then I removed the screws that hold the valve assembly in place. I took the water valve out and removed the electrical connections as well as the plastic tubing which feed the water dispenser and the ice maker. To install the new water valve it was just a matter of reversing steps.
