The rudimentary instructions online say just to twist this and remove it. Am i at risk of breaking it? Does the fan come off first and the fan get mounted after the shroud is installed? What instruction would you suggest?

Hello John, Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, we would recommend taking the condenser fan and motor out first. Then release the locking tabs and flex the shroud to the side to remove from the machine compartment. Hope this helps!
