Agitator didn't spin but everything else worked.
The youtube explanation on how to repair was great, especially the instruction to lift up on the bluish plastic ring (to detach the softener dispenser), and not to tighten the bolt too much when reassembling matters.

top half of the 2-part agitator slipping (not turning) due to stripped teeth on these cogs.
removed the softener dispenser, gently pried off the top with screw driver, loosen nut and lift off the unit holding the cogs. On our (Kenmore, series 90) there was a small retaining ring to hold the cogs in place. Removed retaining ring (no tools), and cogs (one at a time). Replace each old cog with the new one, being careful that it's not upside down or backwards. reassemble. test. rejoice! This $3 part plus $7 S&H - saved a $100 house call from the appliance repair man.. YouTube & PartSelect = super Combo! Thanks!

Agitator would not work properly
Removed the fabric softener dispenser that is on top of the agitator. Used a socket set with a long extension to remove the bolt that holds the agitator to the shaft. The agitator lifts straight up off of the shaft. Really easy.

Agitator spun freely both ways and would not agitate
I used a small flat head screw driver to pop off the top cap, (since mine does not have a fabric softener dispenser). My 90 series didn't have a screw or a nut holding the agitator on, instead there was a plastic shaft with a half inch square hole in the middle. I didn't have a half inch socket at the time so I used a large flat head screw driver to remove it.(lefty loosy righty tighty) Didn't take no time at all to remove the agitator and replace the directional cogs.

ajitator cogs were wore and need replaced
pulled the fabric softner dispenser off, took a flat tip screw driver to pop the cap off. which the piece inside that held the cogs just took a long nose pliers to grip frimly but not to hard and turned it loose then lifted the unit out that had the cogs. the cogs was held on by a small plastic ring that just slipped up over the unit then you can replace the cogs. to put back together do the directions in reverse

was not agitating
Pulled the top off the agitator, used the pliers to pull off the seal, used the socket to get the bolt off , pulled the rest of the agitator off and replaced the directional cogs. Put it back together in reverse. Piece of cake. Beats paying a repair man.

Agitator was banging. Top of agitator had to much play and the gear locks were worn.
Remove softener dispenser. It is hard to do, but it does pop off. Reach down inside and remove the cover. The cover has a handle. Clean the rubber gasket. The bolt holding the agitator can be removed with a socket. You will need a 12" extension. Hold one the fins on the bottom of the agitator and remove the bolt. Remove the agitator. I would recommend ordering an new rubber washer and bolt. I did not, I removed the washer from the old agitator. Install the rubber washer and place the new agitator in the washer, tighten the bolt. Use some petroleum jelly to lube the rubber washer on the cover. Install the cover. Snaps in place. Install softener dispenser. Snaps in place. Test.

Used machine, unknown age, with zero upper agitator motion. The upper agitator could be turned easily in either direction.
Age and condition of the washer were unknown. I had no agitator grease available. I went for just the replacement of the Agitator Directional Cogs. I reviewed the video for replacing the whole kit. Removed fabric softener dispenser and the seal below. The seal needed to be cleaned. Removed the 7/16" bolt with a socket and extra long extension. Removed the agitator. Pulled off upper agitator. The part that holds the cogs is in about the center of the upper agitator. It also needed to be cleaned. One original cog was broken the other were past needing to be replaced. Replaced the cogs and the retainer. There was some effort with getting the upper agitator down far enough to re-install the bolt. That was just a slight alignment issue. The other parts were put back in place.

Damaged Agitator
Super easy. Pulled off the top Fabric Softener Liquid Dispenser cap. Removed the seal. Loosened and removed the bolt (You'll need a socket extension for that). Removed the gear assembly workings and the top agitator. Removed the lower main agitator. Replaced with the new one and put everything back the way it came off. I must also note that I ordered the part from Part Select.com on Monday, and received it the very next day at noon.. Without using "next-day" shipping. How is that possible??? Part Select.com is the best!!!
