Can i ask the stupid question and ask what does this part actually do? I have one that's pretty chewed up and the mower doesn't seem to run properly without it, but i can't determine if this part is the actual issue. Can you help?

Hello Stephen, thank you for your question. This is a special guard-rewind that connects to the blower housing cover. It provides a seal over the flywheel, and protects the rewind from connecting with the flywheel. I hope this helps!

The guard-rewind is beat up. The lawn mower seems to run fine without it.. should I install a new guard rewind. If so how is it installed?

Hi Bill and thank you for contacting us. Yes, this part provides a seal over the flywheel and protects the rewind from connecting with the flywheel. It appears to be a simple repair by removing the blower housing and then installing it under it. See diagram. I hope this helps and good luck with your repair.
