What is the function of this part and how do I remove it?

Hello Thomas, Thanks for your question. This part is the light switch, so if the light in the unit does not turn on when you open the door this may be the part at fault. To remove this part, first ensure your fridge is unplugged. You will need to remove a control panel held in place by 4 screws and a trim, and also disconnect a wiring harness including pressure clips. Installing it is merely a reversal of this process. I hope this helps.
