when engine gets hot it revs up and starts backfireing

Hello Duane, thank you for reaching out. According to our research, a poor fuel ratio is one common cause for engines to backfire. If there is too much fuel in the engine and not enough air. The spark inside the chamber may not burn up all the fuel, allowing a little extra gasoline vapor to enter the exhaust and lead to a backfire. This can be caused by a faulty mass airflow sensor or a clogged engine air filter that chokes the engine and does not allow enough oxygen to flow into it. We recommend you replace the air filter, part number PS11829331, to fix the issue. We hope this solves your problem!
This was an OHV motor so in order to get to the head, you must remove the valve cover and remove the push rods. Remove all four head bolts in an even star pattern. Remove the top cover and pull cord assembly. Remove the muffler cover. Lift off the gas tank and disconnect from the air filter box. Remove the air filter box and carb from the head cover as a single unit. Remove the head cover. You can leave the valve cover in place. Remove old gasket material. Clean surfaces. Replace gasket.
