I have a 26 year old stove top and the electric coils heated intermittantly. I got tired of banging on them to get them to work. I went to various local stores ( Lowe's, appliance stores) and the parts would have been twice the cost and taken a while to come in. I then googled your site and found

I popped out the old burner cartridges and gladly threw them away and popped in the new ones. They work great and no banging! I changed out the old grease filter in the down draft and put the new grill grate on top of the grill in seconds. The timer knob fit well but the burner knobs did not so I had to return those. My "new" stove top looks basically the same except new. The grill grate being black updates the look somewhat. The best thing is that the burners work. Thanks for everything. Read more...

Old element was worn out (burst in line)

First, I cut the power to the stove to be sure no electrical current could be conducted. Next, I removed the two screws that hold the heating element to the back of the stove. Then, I removed the oven racks and slowly slid the heating element out until I could see the wires that attached to it. Because the element has the female end of the wire, I pulled the male ends out of both the left and right side of the element.. This releases the old element and I discarded it. Next, I took the new element, slide the male ends into the new female ends that protruded from both the right and left side of the element. I crimped these slightly with my pliers to make sure that they would stay secure when I pushed the element into place. With the new element securely attached, I slowly slid the element into place, this forces the exposed wires to be retracted out of sight and in the insulated part of the oven. I then took the two screws that I had to removed in the beginning, and used them to fasten this new heating element to the back of the oven. Finally, I turned the power back on and the element worked fine. Read more...

dropped a crock pot glass lid onto the glass cooktop cracking the glass

I slid the range out only a couple of inches so I didn't have to detach the downdraft blower connection. Undoing the four #2 square head screws was easy from the under the control panel as well as the three pairs of screws holding the front of the glass cooktop frame. Undoing the two in the rear (one on each side) was a bit of a challenge in that they were in upside down and difficult to see without a mirror. It was easy to drop the screws as they fell never to be seen again. After they were removed the top was easily removed. Reinstalling the back two screws was the most difficult of the entire procedure. I replaced the #2 square head bits with the same size hex head screws. Using a nut driver made the whole process much easier. By the way, the distance between the holes in the rear and the replacement top is 1/8" difference that made lining up the holes a frustrating experience. I ended up using a rattail file to hog out the opening to enlarge the holes. That made the lineup much much more easy. Read more...

Chip on the side of the cooktop suddenly became a crack extending from the left edge to the middle of the front edge

I followed the directions in the referenced video and also utilized the "butter knife" trick to loosen the top from all the built-up crud. One tip, though - be careful not to pry loose the thin plastic strip around the perimeter that the cooktop sits on. I tore a couple of pieces loose inadvertently; fortunately, after washing, they went back into place. Our stove was purchased in 2013, and there was a lot of built-up crud to deal with. The front rubber gasket was particularly gnarly. The video shows the gasket being soaked and rubbed with straight dishwashing soap, which was a great tip. Had trouble getting the gasket to re-seat at the outer edges of the cooktop - didn't seem to want to stay in place. An expensive fix, but far cheaper than a new stove! Read more...
