The old knobs were broken
all you have to do is push on the new knobs.
This set of four burner knobs helps control the heat on a range or cooktop. Each knob fits a double-flat control shaft and shows the burner settings clearly. Replace the knobs if they are cracked, loose, worn, or missing. Before ordering, inspect each shaft for bending or damage. A new knob will not fix a bad burner switch. Confirm fit with the full appliance model and shaft shape. Turn every control to Off, disconnect power, pull the old knobs straight off, and press the new ones on without force. Check that each pointer lines up correctly.

Cooktop was looking old and worn though there was no working problem.
All of the "old" pieces were very easily removed and replaced with the new pieces. The update looks terrific and works just fine!
