Let me start by saying, I usually hire something like this out but figured I would give it a try. The install was fairly straight forward, however it would’ve been nice if the instructions would have been more useful. Instructing me to remove one screw to release the auger and solenoid enclosure wouldve been nice. There were 3 other screws that I didn’t need to remove and they were the ones holding the auger in place, which made assembling that much more difficult. Once to enclosure was removed, and the solenoid was exposed, it was a seemless process. I would however, recommend paying attention to or taking a picture of the connections on the solenoid. I was lucky to remember or got lucky. Regardless, I was able to complete the project successfully. If I had to do it again, I believe it can be done in 30 minutes or less.

Determined that the little door that opens to allow full size cubes to fall was not opening. If you open freezer door, hold door switch in, select cubes and push in the lever that the glass pushes in you should hear the solenoid lift open which opens the little door. Mine was doing nothing. Removed ice bin and then removed icemaker motor/solenoid section from back of freezer by disconnecting two wire harnesses and one screw. Found that solenoid smelled burnt and could see that inside of the solenoid was swollen out of round and burnt. Simple to replace.

Pulled ice tub, removed auger rotation motor and solenoid housing, removed solenoid and replaced with new one and reinstalled. Checked solenoid was working by holding freezer door open and closing switch to door an activating ice switch-- solenoid picked up. Put ice tub with auger back into freezer.

Ice Dispenser not working properly

The ice dispenser would not dispense cubes. It only dispensed crushed ice. Also the plastic auger was partially broken and it took forever for ice to be dispensed. The auger was easy to figure out that it was broken. The dispenser issue took some time. I removed the ice bin and removed the panel behind it. There was a solenoid that burnt and melted and this did not allow the dispenser door to be controlled. I ordered the parts on a Thursday and they arrived on a Friday. Pretty simple to fix once I knew what the problem was. I could have gotten the parts cheaper from Searsparts.com but their description of parts and their pictures did not match and I wanted to make sure I got the right parts the first time. To be on the safe side I ordered a couple of pins and used one of them. The pin was a little hard to remove from the existing assemble so I put it in a vice and used a small pick and hammered out the old pin.

Ice maker dispensed crushed ice but not cubes

Removed the ice bin and maker, then removed cover from the rear that covered the solenoid that controls the dispensing mechanism. Replace solenoid. The tricky part here is that there is a styrofoam cover around the solenoid pin that needs to be superglued into place and oriented properly during replacement. All electrical feeds snap out neatly and are easily replaced. Reassemble ice dispenser and bin, and viola, your back in business.

The only thing the ice maker will do is give crushed ice. No cubes or water. What part or parts will fix the problem. The little selector tab is broken off but it has been foe several years.
Chris Boyle Profile
Hi Sue, Thank you for the question. Dispensing cubes requires a lever behind the ice bucket to open a flap and allow whole cubes to come out. If an ice cube gets behind the ice bucket, this can prevent the lever from working. Remove the ice bucket and check for ice that may have fallen behind the bucket. If there is no ice make there blocking it you can look at the opening where the brass colored rod enters. There is a solenoid inside that should actuate to move the bucket arm in order to dispense cubes. Stick your finger in there and see if you can get it to drop down. The solenoid may be damaged, or just frozen in place. If it drops down reinstall the bucket and with the freezer door open, actuate the door switch with your finger, while pressing the ice dispenser. The solenoid will snap up then fall back down when you release the lever if it is working properly. If it doesn't, then you will need to remove the housing it is in and see if it has frost build up, if so set the bin out at room temperature to let any frost build up melt. The solenoid shaft must move freely in order to work properly. After checking and removing any frost reinstall the bucket again and with the freezer door open, actuate the door switch again with your finger, while pressing the ice dispenser. If it is still not working properly then the solenoid will need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

My fridge makes ice. It dispenses cubes but not crushed ice. I get cubes whichever button i press. No video i can find addresses this issue - help!!!!!
Chris Boyle Profile
Hi Rodney, Thank you for your question. Based on the information I have found, it sounds like this problem is caused because of a locked shifter. You will need to remove the ice bucket assembly from the refrigerator and empty the ice into a container and place it back in the freezer. Rinse the the bucket with warm water all around the dispensing end and allow the bucket to dry. After the bucket has dried place the ice back in it and install it back in the refrigerator. It should now work correctly for you. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

I can't get my ice dispenser to work. The ice maker also works fine. My fridge dispenses water and i can hear the door open for ice but nothing comes out. There are no sounds, i replaced the auger motor, but it's still not working, not sure what else it could be?
Chris Boyle Profile
Hello Raven, thank you for your question. After going over you issues, It seems like the issue could be the dispenser solenoid part number PS11699580 or the dispenser interface control part number PS966800. I would check both of those parts. I hope this helps!

With the ice bucket removed, freezer door open, door switch depressed and push and hold the dispenser flapper- the following is what happens and continues this irregular cycle as long as i hold the flapper....." i can hear the new solenoid wr62x1005 engage and dis-engage while the auger motor will rotate a turn or 2...then stop" this cycle keeps repeating as long as i hold the flapper. so in closing if i put the ice bucket back in, close the door and push a cup agianst the flapper i will get a couple cubes, then stops, then a couple cubes, then stops etc. i have already replaced the solenoid and the wr23x10783 switch, did not help. please help. thank you, jonathan
Chris Boyle Profile
Hello Jonathan, thank you for your question. IT sounds like the auger motor may be failing. The auger motor should turn freely and it sounds like its starting and stopping. We would recommend replacing the auger motor. I hope this helps!

The ice maker is making ice but it won't dispense any however the light goes dim and the dispenser door opens. Also the crusher quit working a few months back and the water dispenser quit a couple years ago. I'm not sure if there are any related parts. Any ideas? Thanks, dave
Chris Boyle Profile
Hello David, thank you for inquiring. For this symptom you will want to replace either the Dual Inlet Water Valve part PS304374, the Ice and Water Filter part PS8746144, or the Electronic Board part PS12069099. We hope this helps.

On my GE refrigerator I can only get cubed ice to work but when I try to switch to crushed nothing will come out? Is there a part that switches ice maker from cubes to crushed that may have gone bad?
Chris Boyle Profile
Hello Jim, Thank you for the question. It the dispenser is only give cubed ice then this usually means the Solenoid kit will need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

After being away for six months, i turned the “lock button” back on the refrigerator. I am able to dispense water, but not any ice. It looks like it’s made ice, but doesn’t drop down into the ice bucket. You can hear it trying at the door. What else can i troubleshoot?
Chris Boyle Profile
Hi Kim, Thank you for the question. I suggest removing the ice maker and bucket and letting them thaw out. It may have just "froze up" from 6 months of not being used. Hope this helps!

Changed inline filter flushed 5 gallons water out of water dispenser then the next day noticed had too much ice and lifted arm to stop making ice then noticed 3 days later water not refilling ice maker and water dispenser stop giving water
Chris Boyle Profile
Hello Ron, Thank you for your inquiry. We would recommend checking your water inlet valve and also checking the lines to make sure they are not cracked or frozen. You can test the water inlet valve with a multimeter. Hope this helps!

The solenoid burned up and melted creating a really bad smell in both the freezer and refrigerator. Do I need to replace something other then the solenoid to prevent it from happening again? What do you recommend to do to clean the ice maker so the ice doesn't taste bad after due to the solenoid burn?
Chris Boyle Profile
Hello Steve, Thank you for your inquiry. Check the connecting wires for any visible damage or loose connections. You can remove the ice maker and clean with a sponge and a solution of vinegar and water, making sure to carefully dry before replacing. Allow for several ice maker cycles to run through and dispose of the ice remove any residue. We hope this helps and if you need help placing an order for a part, customer service is open 7 days a week. Please feel free to give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you!
