This door latch keeps the microwave door closed during operation. The latch is approximately 7 inches long and has 2 hooks to ensure that the door closes properly. The hooks also contact the door switches to provide power to the controls. The microwave will not start unless the door is properly closed, so if you notice that the microwave door is not staying closed, check to ensure that the latch is in working order and is not damaged. The latch assembly is made of plastic and has a spring attached to provide downward tension to keep the hooks engaged. If either of the hooks is broken or does not have any spring tension, you may need to replace the door latch. Before beginning this repair, make sure to unplug the unit and remove the inner door panel to access the door latch.

MW wouldn't stop running- not heating, just running
Went through some anxious hours when I found that the MW would not turn off. The only way was to leave the door open. Not a solution. Tried a appliance repair that I knew, they didn't work on MWs. Spoke to the manufacturer, for $99 would come out and then tell me the real cost to fix. After more searching, even to maybe getting a new MW, (which necessitates getting a new bracket for the over the stove MW. They evidently are not standard, but proprietary to brands. Not good!)Buying a MW, okay, but someone has to put it in. Where are the good old days of selling, delivery, service? I'm from a small town, that's SOP.
I found PartSelect and called them. They didn't have the exact problem I had. They had a FAQ about the MW not starting. Mine wouldn't stop.
After describing what was happening, they had it in one. Looked at the plastic latch, bottom was curved out of shape. Door wouldn't close properly, causing it to run. It didn't heat, just ran. I ordered the parts. A spring and a latch. They came in quickly and my son and I began the repair. Found a You Tube on a similar type of door and they posited it might be the latch with step by step to follow. Ran back and forth from computer to kitchen.
Now, we didn't have the right tools to go along with the video we were watching. A long thin blade (about 12 inches) knife was used as the putty knife to pry up the edging that held the door glass. My son's long thin tiny philips screwdriver he uses to fix toys worked for the really tiny screws that held the latch part. We didn't have long nose pliers, but we messed up that part anyway, forgot to put in the new spring with the new latch. We worked it by hand and it went back together. Put it all together and discovered we forgot to put those tiny screws back at the latch. Wrestled the door back on and started it. Almost had a heart attack as it still was running when off. So unplugged, let it reset and it's been fine. Think it probably would have gone smoother with the proper tools. Anyway, glad I found PartSelect and that it was a relatively easy fix, even for those without tools and experience. A am a retiree, so don't feel you can't do it. Thank you so much PartSelect.

Door switch inconsistent operation for Open/Close sensing.
Ordered top & bottom micro-switches and mounting plate parts. Internet reviews could not find specifics if the issue was due to a top/bottom or combination of micro-switch or mounting plate failure. Pulled the plug. Removed the top vent assembly cover held in by 2 Phillips screws inside the vent. Removed the control panel held in by 1 Phillip screw at the top vent assembly area. Lifted control panel upward to release the catch and moved it off to the side - didn't disconnect any leads. Used a Torx bit to remove the door switch mounting plates at the front and pulled the plates through the opening from the control panel. Documented the wire color code connections, the top plate uses 2 micro's with one using both the closed & open contact. Installed the respective micros on the mounting plates and worked backwards with the wiring and removal steps. Once completed, the open/close sensing has worked every time. Read more...

One of the two plastic latches broke off, disabling my microwave
I have a GE Advantium/micorwave oven. It is the model that has the hinges on the side, NOT the bottom. First, removing the door is necessary. The grill has to be removed first, then the door lifts right out. Next the plastic backing on the door has to be very carfully taken off to expose where the new latch has to be placed. Use a flat screw driver or putty knife to go around the permiter releasing the internal, unseen, plastic catches that hold it on. This should be done carefully, to avoid breaking the catches that you can't see. After the plastic is mostly removed putting in the spring is not too difficult, but a second set of hands is almost manditory. Read more...

door latch inside of door broke off
The repair man said this would not be covered under my home warranty and that it would cost too much for him to fix, so he showed me what to do, I ordered the part and did it myself. I just had to gently pry the tabs up on the inside of the door panel using a putty knife. Once the latch is visible you unhook it from a clip and a little spring. Attached the spring onto replacement latch and snap back into place, snap the tab of the door panel back in place and your done. Read more...

The door open lever behind the control panel broke so the door would not open.
As this microwave is part of a wall micro/oven combo, we removed the trim, slid out the microwave and tried for days to figure out how to release the microwave control panel. Through sheer force, we were able to release the lower half of the panel...enough to get our fingers, chopsticks and a flashlight inside to remove the broken lever. It took 2 of us to pull the panel out and replace the lever. I was hoping for a video online of how to remove that control panel but luckily we changed out the broken lever and it's back in working order! Glad we didn't have to trash and entire microwave/oven combo for one broken plastic part...it all works fine now. Read more...

microwave door stuck....wont open
The reason the door would not open upon pressing the door opener is because the BRCKT-LATCH was broken. I discovered that after opening the microwave enclosing. The BRCKT-LATCH has two ends sticking out....each fits into a hole. One of the ends on the LATCH was broken and therefore it was not tightly fit. No upon pushing the door opener the LATCH would not function properly since it was loosely fit and hence the door would not open.
To Fix this issue:
1) Buy a new BRCKT-LATCH
2) Remove the microwave enclosing. I had to use a special screwdriver, since the screws were security protected on my microwave. After removing the case, I opened the door by manually pressing the door latch upwards (please make sure that the microwave is not connected to the electric socket before removing the enclosing).
3) pull out the old LATCH from the microwave.
4) carefully insert the new LATCH. Try not to put too much pressure when trying to fit the latch, or else the ends may snap again!!
5) Close the door and try opening it by pressing the door opener. it should work now!!
