Door switch inconsistent operation for Open/Close sensing.
Ordered top & bottom micro-switches and mounting plate parts. Internet reviews could not find specifics if the issue was due to a top/bottom or combination of micro-switch or mounting plate failure. Pulled the plug. Removed the top vent assembly cover held in by 2 Phillips screws inside the vent. Removed the control panel held in by 1 Phillip screw at the top vent assembly area. Lifted control panel upward to release the catch and moved it off to the side - didn't disconnect any leads. Used a Torx bit to remove the door switch mounting plates at the front and pulled the plates through the opening from the control panel. Documented the wire color code connections, the top plate uses 2 micro's with one using both the closed & open contact. Installed the respective micros on the mounting plates and worked backwards with the wiring and removal steps. Once completed, the open/close sensing has worked every time.

To Fix this issue:
1) Buy a new BRCKT-LATCH
2) Remove the microwave enclosing. I had to use a special screwdriver, since the screws were security protected on my microwave. After removing the case, I opened the door by manually pressing the door latch upwards (please make sure that the microwave is not connected to the electric socket before removing the enclosing).
3) pull out the old LATCH from the microwave.
4) carefully insert the new LATCH. Try not to put too much pressure when trying to fit the latch, or else the ends may snap again!!
5) Close the door and try opening it by pressing the door opener. it should work now!! Read more...

microwave door stuck....wont open
The reason the door would not open upon pressing the door opener is because the BRCKT-LATCH was broken. I discovered that after opening the microwave enclosing. The BRCKT-LATCH has two ends sticking out....each fits into a hole. One of the ends on the LATCH was broken and therefore it was not tightly fit. No upon pushing the door opener the LATCH would not function properly since it was loosely fit and hence the door would not open.To Fix this issue:
1) Buy a new BRCKT-LATCH

Went to PartSelect web site and discovered the three switches and frame were bundled in to one part number, 43501A. So, I called and spoke with a very knowledgeable technician and she explained why plus helped me order the part over the phone. When I received the part, the switches were already mounted in the frame and the frame was modified compared to the OEM frame. As I began to remove the old frame, I discovered why the new frame was modified. It was as if PartSelect had done many of these door interlock repairs and they knew exactly where and how to modify the frame and communicated this with the manufacturer, because the new frame installation was very easy, there was nothing hard about installing the new frame with the switches already in place. I then reconnected the wiring to the switches and tested the microwave and it works fine now, Problem solved, Thanks PartSelect.com Read more...

Defective door interlock switches
Removed each switch (3) and checked them with multi-meter; got intermittent readings on two of the three. Also broke of a piece of the frame that holds the switches trying to remove them (old, exposed to heat and moisture over the years caused the plastic to become brittle and the wiring connectors were also hard to disconnect probably because of heat and moisture over the years). Door Latch
Once I had got the seal off, I thought I was home dry and the rest would be easy. Wrong! To get at the broken latch for the door (same if I was replacing the handle) I still had to get the stainless steel outer shell away from the main frame of the door (without bending it) and there was clips all along that had to somehow all be pushed out of their sockets at the same time so that the stainless steel outer shell would come away from the rest of the door, and I could get at the screw that held the latch in place that needed to be replaced. I came up with the idea of pushing 2 quarters in the gap between the door shell and the main frame next to every single clip. I then went back along where all of he quarters were pushed in, and pushed a penny inbetween the two quarters and this opened up the clips just enough to disengage them from their sockets, but without bending the stainless steel. As I gradually went around the door pushing the pennies in, the outer shell poped off, and I could get at the screw to get the broken latch off. Once I knew I could get at the part that I need to replace, I went on line and searched for a place to get Kitchenaid parts. That is when I found this site. I ordered the 2 parts that I needed from partselect.com at around 2.30 PM. At 3.15 PM the next day they were delivered to me in South Florida, and within 10 minutes they were out of the packing, and I had the microwave fixed. Getting to the part that needed replacing wasn't easy, but I hope that the above makes it easier for somebody else in a similar situation. The service from partselect.com was excellent. I had never heard of them before, but would certainly recommend them to anybody.

Broken Microwave door latch
Have you ever tried getting the inner seal off a microwave door in order to replace a door latch or the handle? It is not an easy job. I was advised by a service technician that they usually just order a complete new door for a broken latch or handle as it is so difficult to get the seal off without damaging the door. I priced a new door, and it would have been more than the microwave, so I searched the internet for ideas. I found several sites that gave various suggestions. What worked for me was to slide a putty knife inbetween the top of the inner seal and the door - starting at the top right corner and working along the top first. I actually used several knives so that the six clips that are along the top did not pop back into their sockets. The first clip is 55 mm from the top right corner. There is then more every 95mm along the top of the frame. If you can push these in with a knife, keeping the knives in place, you will be able to carefully pull the seal out. From the top left corner going down, there is a clip 25mm from the top, and another 85mm from that point - again push a knife in to release the clip. Carefully work your way along the bottom, The clips are in the same place as on the top. Then work along the edge closest to the microwave. With a bit of patience, the seal will come out in one piece. Even if you break it getting it out, it is better than the alternative, and you can always get another one at partselect.comOnce I had got the seal off, I thought I was home dry and the rest would be easy.
