Broiler element would not heat; bake element did heat

  • Brad from San Carlos, CA
  • Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins
  • Socket set
Removed the oven racks, removed screws holding element hanging support from roof of oven, removed screws holding plate of element to rear of oven. CAREFULLY worked element loose from back of oven and gently alternated pulling each side of element (near the base) until connecting wires came free of insulating batting. Pull too hard and t he connecting wires can break loose and disappear behind the batting. Once freed, disconnected both wires with socket (use pliers for extra grip on flat part of connectors, if necessary), removed element, braced new element on bottom of oven, aligning connectors to now-free wires. Re-attached with the new screws that came with the element (attachment points on element are threaded; do not reuse old screws as the threads may not match), gently re-inserted element into insulating batting at rear of oven, reattached hanging support, then replaced element plate screws.

Can be difficult to work in small, deep ovens....many oven doors can be removed. If so, remove oven door and use a chair as a support...lie on your back on the chair and hang your head and arms in the oven.

using the info on this site i guessed it was the switch. It was. this is a Radiant Heat in counter drop on cook top. i was nervous about getting it out of the counter but that was eassy, just sits on top. the One issue was diconnecting the BX electric cable from the elecric box. mine did not have threads and a nut. but a push in fitting w ith small tabs.. i forced it out by pushing the tabs in with a screw driver.. later found out it was a band that was eassily removable by just prying it open with a screw driver... and later replacing it.. the glas removal was just screws and the switch was insised a cover with four screws.. plugged the new one in (careful to keep the connections the same, and reversed the process.. ready to fix it again if needed!thanks for having the part... probably saved $200! can take less than 30 minutes if you get past the electric connection quicker than i did... that;s it!

The hardest part was getting the correct part. I trusted the on line number and the first part I received was incorrect. I should have taken the part number off the old switch. When I did, I found out that the part number changed when I tried to order it. When the part came, the wiring instructions were not even close. I just took one wir e at a time off the old switch and put it on the same terminal of the new switch. The repair was/is very simple made complex and too much time because of a wrong part and incorrect wiring instructions. As far as getting the incorrect and correct parts through the mail it was very fast. Received both parts in less than 3 days. A bonus is that I sent the old switch back for a rebate. Thanks for that.

Looked up the part, ordered it, and it was there in 3 days. It was slightly different than the old control, but a very well-written set of instuctions detailed which wires to move to which terminal. The entire repair took about 30 minutes, including moving the range out, replacing the control, and push the range back in place. Works pe rfectly.

  • John from Durham, NC
  • Really Easy

It's so simple most people could mannage the repair. Turn oven off. Remove oven door and shelves. Use a nut driver to remove mounting screws. Pliers to pull quick connect terminated wires off element terminals. Use pliers to push connectors onto new element, wires may connect to either terminal. Nut driver for screws to mechanically mount new element. Replace shelves and door. First time element gets hot it will burn off oils and dirt, not a problem but do it now not later.
