The rheostat controlled light failed
As I removed the broken part, I marked each wire indicating the color of the wire nut I would use for the installation of the replacement switch. With the new part, I connected the 2 yellow marked wires to the yellow supply wire. (It was "hot" - surprise!!) I connected 1 orange marked wire to one of the 2 corresponding orange wire. I then tested the switch and realized I had connected the light wire to the vent supply wire. I switched to the light supply wire, connected the fan control correctly. Life is good in my kitchen: cool and bright!

Hood lights blink on and off. When you wiggle the bulb it goes on but does not stay on.
I had to remove the underside sheet metal (two separate parts) by unscrewing the screws securing them to the hood. The sheet metal piece that covers the fans had to be fully removed to be able to access the sheet metal part to which the light sockets are attached. There are vertical legs that connect this second assembly to the roof of the range hood so this part could not be removed to work on it. I was able to move this part enough to get vision on the brackets that held the light sockets In place. I removed the old light sockets and the rivets securing the internal electricity conduction parts of the socket were loose and trying to solder them did not improve their ability to make good contact and keep the bulbs lit. I therefore had to order replacement sockets. The shipment of these sockets was delayed and I had to put the range hood back together for Christmas Eve party so I found a different type of ceramic socket at the local hardware store and I was able to use those to replace the defective sockets that came with the range hood. I was actually happy with this different socket because I felt that the quality of design and materials in the factory socket would lend itself to malfunction again in the future. The new design socket that I installed seemed far more sturdy and less likely to fail in the future. Unfortunately these new sockets were slightly shorter in length than the ones I was replacing. As a result I had to modify the Dacor light trim rings to allow the bulb to screw in about a 1/4" further than the stock socket required. All in all about a 4-5 hour job with a trip to the hardware store and lots of research on line. I will say that despite contacting appliance repair companies all around the Bay Area, I did not find one that was willing to work on my Dacor Range Hood. That's why I had to do the DIY thing. Now I'm an expert.
