Ice maker quit making ice--had to either be a faulty switch in the ice maker or a faulty water valve. I guessed it was the ice maker switch and ended up being correct.

It was exactly as everyone else described--remove old ice maker, unplug, plug in new ice maker, attach new ice maker. 3 screws, 1 plug. My plug was the one on the ice maker not on the refrigerator (ie I used the wiring/plug that was already in the freezer).

Icemaker Died

  • Don from Jacksonville, TX
  • Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins

The instructions are practically no help, but if you study the diagram, you can figure out the one screw you need to remove. Then the icemaker lift off of two brackets. I couldn't see how to use a screwdriver to unlock the bracket, but just applying mild pressure and pulling it forward brought it right out. I didn't have to change anyt hing with the plug already intalled so it was very easy to pop in, lock the plug, pop into brackets, replace screw and I was in business. 24 hours later I had a bucket of ice! 15 minutes to figure out how to get old out and 5 min to replace new one. Fairly easy. Read posts here to get hints!

On my particular model refrigerator I only needed to remove one screw and disconnet the plug. I then slid the unit out. The new ice maker did not come with the plastic sled that was attached to the old unit. I removed and attached the sled to the new unit with 3 screws.

Ice maker wouldn't eject the ice often enough. After reading a few other stories, I just ordered the universal ice maker from Part Select. All I had to do was remove some of the plastic shrouds from my old ice maker and put them on the new one. I also reused my mounting brackets. The whole job took me 20 minutes.

Ice maker was leaking and had metal in the ice

Removed the screws and disconnected the electric. I put the proper electric harness on and went to fit the unit in but it didn't fit. Until I figured out that you have to use the clips from the old unit that hold the unit in place. The actually hang on them. Once I figured it out it was easy.

ice maker gears stripped/ bearing & cup assy broken
3 of 5 people found this instruction helpful.
  • Timothy from Lake Geneva, WI
  • Really Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins
  • Nutdriver, Screw drivers
The bearing & cup assembly was broken and the gears in the drive assy were stripped. Unfortunately I couldn't find anywhere to buy the gears without buying the entire motor assy with the gear box already on it. Cost was up to $85 with shipping but at least it now works fine.

To repair: a 1/4 nut driver will take off screw b elow ice maker and all you need to do is loosen the 2 screws above the ice maker then push it upward slightly and it will slide off the top 2 screws. Then pull the power connector off from behind the ice maker at the side of the refridge. Then pull straight out and it will slide off the water fill tube. Now with unit out of refridge I took the cover off the front of the ice maker and removed the 3 philip screws. I then pulled the motor/gear assy off from the chassis of the ice maker. I then had to remove the 2 philip screws on the chassis (under the motor/gear assy) to remove the cube maker/element from the chassis. This allowed me to remove the rotating cube spatula bar to replace the filler cup/bearing assy. Then I reinstalled the spatula bar and the 2 philip scews on the chassis to the cube maker/element assy. I then installed the new motor/gear assy to the chassis and installed the 3 remaining philip screws. Put the cover back on the ice maker and inserted assy back into the refridge by first reattaching the power connector and then sliding backward onto the water fill tube and then slipping over the top of the 2 top screws on the refridge. Then I installed the screw below the ice maker and tightened all 3. Presto - repair done in 30 minutes and perfect cubes were spitting out within the hour.

Ice maker failure to produce ice
2 of 2 people found this instruction helpful.
  • Conley from richmond, TX
  • Really Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins
  • Screw drivers
The repair was simple.

I first did a diagnosis of the optical cuircuits and found them good. The tray heated up and when resetting the moor controller, the water cyccled to fill the tray so the only other thing it could be was the motor controller.

removed the service door for the ice maker
I removed the wire protectore screw and shroud
pulled the icemaker unit out and unplugged the unit
removed the motor controller end cap
unscrewed 3 screws holding the motor controller
removed and replaced the motor controller. ensured that all wire harness connector poiints were solid
reverse the above instructions and in 5 hours I was getting ice again!

$90 turned out to be a savings from the $250 it would have cost to have someone come out and look at the fridge.

I highly recommend to anyone who can read and use a screwdriver to perform this repair if you have diagnosed this as the root of your problem!

Icemaker was leaking whenever icemaker was set to on position
2 of 2 people found this instruction helpful.
  • Yvette from RSM, CA
  • Very Easy

We followed the video on the KitchenAid website. We turned off water valve at the wall, unplugged the refrigerator, removed the old icemaker by unscrewing the three mounting screws. We unplugged old icemaker from electrical source at back of refrigerator freezer compartment and removed it. We detached the on/off bar from the old icemak er and installed it on the new icemaker. The new icemaker fit perfectly. We plugged in the electric wire to the existing power cord at the back of the refrigerator freezer compartment. We placed the new icemaker in the same position as the old, making sure the mounting screw holes were aligned. Plugged refrigerator back in and turned on the water. Works beautifully.

Just like the others. Unplug the refrigerator. Loosen the top two screw and remove the bottom screw. Unplug the unit, plug in the new one, slid the unit over the top two screws, replace the bottom screw and tighten the top two screws. Done. I ordered the unit Sunday it was shipped Monday and arrived Phoenix Wednesday, shipper then re routed it to Tucson Thursday who sent it back to Phoenix on Friday and finallydelivered it Saturday.
