I removed the outer plate by sticking a very small screwdriver in the small holes at the bottom of the plate and pulling the plate toward me.
I then removed the 4 screws from the internal plate and pulled the plate toward me.
Then I romoved the 3 screws holding the old solenoid and unplugged it.
Next I put the new solenoid in place and replaced the three screws.
Finally I plugged in the solenoid and replaced the internal and external plates.

Ice chute frosted up

Procedure for Replacing the Ice Chute Plate
1. Turn off the power.
2. Snap off the outside trim ring. Use a plastic screwdriver to avoid scratching the cabinet.
3. Locate the three small holes below the control panel facing, just above ice chute. The center hole is not used. With a small, blunt, object (wire – blunted nail) that is slightly smaller than the holes, push up rather firmly up through the outer holes to release front control panel.
4. Remove the three wire connectors from printed circuit board. Firmly pull/pry them straight out of retaining clip. Use caution: Excessive force will break clips.
5. Release the secondary panel by removing four screws (one in each corner).
6. Remove the flap assembly.
7. Clean all accessible areas with 1/10 bleach water to sanitize. Rinse the cleaned area with clear water and thoroughly dry everything before re-assembling the panel.
8. Install the new flap assembly.
9. Re-installed everything in the reverse order and check the functionality.
10. Order a spare ice chute flapper to be ready for the next event.

Ice cubes froze in the tray and frost was all underneath

  • Michael from Sylva, NC
  • Easy
  • 30 - 60 mins
  • Socket set
I read stories from the website how others did it so I figured I would give it a try. I put all the frozen stuff in the refrigerator piled up. Took out the shelves. Took out 2 screws with a socket extension ( nut driver will work fine.) Remove the light bulb. lifted up on the back panel...it came right out. Saw the coils and on top the se nsor. Took it off, cut the wires, spliced in the color coded new one ( pink to pink, orange to orange) Stuck it in the top coil in the original position and crossed my fingers! I put all the pieces back easily, restocked the freezer and waited. HOORAY!! My ice cubes are all separate and free. NO frost inside. A very easy fix for $20.

Note: If there is a large amount of ice build up on your coils a hair dryer works great. The drain is on the bottom anyway. Also , you may want to seal around the wire nuts to keep moisture out. I did

The Auger had broken blades and cover broken
7 of 12 people found this instruction helpful.
  • Gregh from Wittmann, AZ
  • A Bit Difficult
  • 30 - 60 mins
  • Screw drivers
To take the ice dispenser apart is not difficult. A ring removal tool would have helped to remove the auger. The Auger nut was difficult to remove and I used a visegrip to pull it off. Once the retaining ring was removed the repair was easy.
Never did it before but figured it out.

Remove plastic nut after removing auger. This procedure will release crushed ice blades and 5 plastic washers, 3 flat and 2 raised. You have got to remember order of blades and washer. Again draw diagram take pictures. Very, very important. Put back as taken apart. Good Luck

ice maker would not dispense due to a broken crusher cover

  • Andy from Villa Rica, GA
  • Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins
  • Screw drivers
I removed and cleaned out the ice tray, then removed the ice auger. Next I had to remove the front cover of the tray that housed the crusher, this was done by removing to screws on the bottom and sliding the crusher section, once the crusher section was removed I simply slid off the crusher cover and replaced with the new one and put it back together. It was that simple.

2nd repair to ice dispenser in 4 years
6 of 10 people found this instruction helpful.
  • Jerry from Henderson, TX
  • Really Easy
  • Less than 15 mins
The first repair 2 years ago was due to the plastic auger that moves the cubes forward had broken. Recently we had began to notice small piece of plastic in our ice water. Finally the plastic piece that keeps multiple cubes from falling through the chute broke. I decided this time just to replace the whole auger and bucket assembly. Pulle d the old one out... put the new one in, and alot less agravation than replacing parts.

freezer frosting in back, refrigerator compartment warm
4 of 4 people found this instruction helpful.
  • Scott from EL DORADO HLS, CA
  • Easy
  • 1- 2 hours
  • Screw drivers, Socket set
I followed the partselect videos for the temp sensor and defrost thermostat and the refrigerator has been working well for a about a week now. The refrigerator is old enough that I was just going to replace it. When I called the repair company I use, they said it would cost $200 to $300 for the repair, but I didn't want to put that money into an old refrigerator. I did a little research, found this site and figured it would be worth buying about $20 in parts and giving it a try. I have absolutely no experience working on refrigerators, but the videos were so easy to follow, everything went smoothly. The old thermostat was definitely broken when I checked it with a meter, so I'm pretty confident that the problem is fixed.

After shutting off the h2o, I unplugged the refrigerator. Using the nut driver, I removed the cardboard backing. Then I removed the fitting where the inlet line to the ice maker and pried the old tubing from the unit. I then undid the clasp about 1/2 way up the back and removed the section that went through the back to the ice maker. ... Read more /> I then reassembled everything and plugged in the refrigerator as well as turning on the water.
Keep in mind that because h2o and electricity are involved. MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO h2o LEAKS.
