The motor bearing had gone bad.

The difficulty was getting the motor out of the unit. It is held in by a snap-fitted support piece that gets in the way. After several failed maneuvers, I removed the fan from the motor (a job that would be easier if my hands were half-sized) and then extract the motor. Then the fan had to be replaced and tightened on the new motor. H owever, now that the job is done, I'm happy with the end result. The new motor runs quietly, and the unit is back in action.
