Then I figured it was this part - the motor coupling. I unplugged the machine and took out the drain tube. I leaned the machine back and propped it up with an empty detergent bottle, because those were abundant. Ratchet off a few bolts and the motor comes out. The coupling was indeed broken. The new one slips right in - I tapped it a few times with a mallet for good measure / vengeance. Ratcheted the bolts back on and tipped it back up.
Pros: Washer works now.
Cons: Everest-esque laundry pile to address.

Cleaned up the bowl whilst it was apart (good buildup of junk under the agitator). Replaced agitator, new t ... Read more hrust washer to find that grease should be applied but isn't included in kit (get part not 350849). Grrr.... Applied new auger, cam, dogs and holder. (No instructions in kit for assembling cam, dogs & holder, but you can work it out ok). Applied new bolt & washer, new seal on cap. Installed fabric softener. Could have been a 15 minute job but peace and quiet in the garage makes it worthy of taking longer ;-)

Read more in order to remove the door and replace the bottom cams and brackets. This took a couple of minutes, replacing the cams was about 5 minutes and putting the door back on the pivot and reattaching the top hinge was another couple of minutes.
If I had called a service tech they would have charged a minimum of two hour and for the parts. I estimate that I saved myself about $100.
