It is a rubber seal with a diameter of approximately 1.5 inches, that sits between the pump and filter to prevent air and paint leakage between the two mating parts. If the ring is lost, worn out, damaged, or has lost elasticity, it will need to be replaced. A faulty O-ring will result in issues such as leaking, low pressure, inconsistent spray patterns, and friction damage between the filter and pump. To replace the O-ring, open the sprayer housing and twist the pump off. Carefully pry the old O-ring off and clean the mounting area to ensure a good seal for the new ring. Place the O-ring over the filter and apply light pressure until it is flat against the surface. Reassemble the equipment to complete your repair.

I purchased the new o-ring and took off the old o-ring with a small flat head screw driver. I put the new o-ring on and filled up the container with paint and the suction held after letting the air out. This fixed my issue of the air coming back into the container.
