The function of the oil pump is to deliver a steady flow of oil (8-50 ml per minute depending on the model) into the groove of the guide bar which is then carried by the chain around the whole bar. The throttle engages the motor and oil pump to work at the same time. The oil reduces friction and heat that can occur while cutting.

Saw Oil Pump Cpl., Ea3201s "This chainsaw oil pump is sold individually. It measures approximately 2.5-Inches wide and 1.5-Inches high. The oil pump drives bar oil from the oil tank to the bar. The oil lubricates the bar and chain to avoid wear and heat. To inspect your oil pump, remove the bar and chain from your saw and start the engine. You should notice oil moving from the oiler location. It is common for saw dust and debris to plug the oiler, so check to see if the opening is clear. Also inspect the opening in the bar to ensure it is not clogged. If the oiler is clean and no oil is flowing, this likely means the pump is bad and needs to be replaced. For this repair, you will begin by removing the side cover, the chain, and the bar. Then remove the retaining clip and the outer washer. Use a screwdriver to gently loosen the retaining clip off the crankshaft. Be mindful not to misplace the retaining clip as it comes loose. Remove the clutch drum from the crankshaft. With that removed, now pull off the inner washer. You will then need to remove the brake assembly. Make sure it is in the lock position, so the spring does not have any tension on it."
