I took the new one out of the box, washed it with warm soapy water and then used it to fill the coffee maker with fresh water...I'm just glad that we were able to find the "Empire Red" carafe and on this site it was a breeze.

The old lid had broken.

The old lid was out of stock so I replaced the whole carafe. It arrived, was washed and works like a charm.
