How difficult is it to change the auger belt?
For model number 536887990
Hi XXXX,
Thank you for your question. This repair is not too difficult. Before doing this repair, make sure that the engine has cooled and to prevent the engine from accidentally starting, remove the wire and boot from the spark plug. When doing this repair, make sure there is little or no fuel in the tank. To start, remove the screws securing the belt cover, so you can remove it. Then remove the belt from both the auger drive pulley and the idler pulley. Then, tip the snowblower forward, so that it rests on the auger housing and remove the frame cover. Then use a wrench to loosen the belt retaining bolt, so you can remove it. Next, depress the drive lever and use a clamp to hold the lever in place. Then remove the auger belt from the drive pulley and lift the drive plate to remove the old belt. Then feed the new belt under the drive plate and through the housing. Then loop the belt onto the auger drive pulley and remove the clamp to release the drive lever and reposition the belt retaining bolt and tighten it. Then reinstall the frame cover and secure it with the mounting bolts. Put the snow blower back in the upright position and align the new belt on the engine drive pulley and the idler pulley. Then reattach the belt cover and secure it with the screws. With the repair complete, reattach wire and boot to the spark plug and fill the tank with fuel. The snowblower should now work for you. How do I install a idler traction drive spring?
For model number 536887990
Hello Joe, Thank you for writing. The easiest way is to attach one of the ends to either the drive lever or the idler pulley bracket then have a strong piece of string tied to the other end of the spring then pull it into place. Best Regards

Refurbishing for next winter season
I replaced the auger belt and drive belt by separating the machine. The auger belt alone can be replaced by simply tilting without separating but the drive belt can not. So after separating the machine, I removed the auger belt by loosening the belt guide and removing the tensioner. I then loosened the nut that secures the drive wheel.

This gave me enough play to remove the drive belt from the drive tensioner and then wiggle it from the drive wheel and out of the machine. Install by wiggling the belt back behind the drive wheel until you can slip it on the wheel. pull tensioner pulley out of the way to get the belt on the top pulley. Tighten the nut to secure the drive wheel. Reconnect the machine at the bottom of the auger housing and replace the auger belt, tensioner, and belt guide. Complete by replacing the upper bolts that hold the two parts together. I have not replaced the friction wheel as of yet. My process took 30 - 45 minutes for both belts.
