Pulley-starter – Part Number: 295871

Pulley-starter
Part #295871
Difficulty pulling the starter rope or a cord that stays extended can result from a damaged recoil pulley. This wheel guides and stores the rope while helping turn the engine during starting. Similar symptoms can come from a frayed rope, seized engine, bent starter housing, broken pawls, or weak return spring, so check those items first. Match the replacement to the full engine model, type, code, and equipment model. Work on a cool engine with the spark plug lead removed. Release spring tension slowly and keep your face and hands clear of the starter housing. Route the rope correctly, confirm smooth return, and reinstall every guard before starting the engine.

Part #399671
Hard starting may come from the recoil system instead of the carburetor or spark plug. If the rope pulls but the engine does not turn, the starter clutch may be worn, dirty, or jammed. The clutch turns the crankshaft during starting and lets go when the engine runs. First inspect the rope, rewind spring, pulley, flywheel screen, and clutch bearing. Confirm fit with the complete engine number. Remove the spark plug wire, wait for hot parts to cool, and keep dirt out of the bearing area. Test free movement before putting the shroud back on.
