Hard starting or an engine that suddenly stops may point to a damaged magneto armature. This ignition coil turns magnetic energy from the spinning flywheel into the electrical pulse that fires the spark plug. First try a known-good spark plug and inspect the safety switches, grounding wire, terminals, and flywheel magnet. Confirm fit from the full engine identification numbers, since similar coils may mount differently. Work only with the engine off and cool. Disconnect the battery and spark plug lead before removing covers. During installation, use the air gap listed in the service manual and tighten the mounting screws evenly. Keep hands clear of the flywheel and use an insulated tester to check for spark.
