Dryer overheating

my dryer heating element is getting very hot to the point of discoloring the back of my dryer then it trips the breaker after maybe 5 min . what is going on please help thanks have a great day

Whirlpool gas dryer

The gas dryer will not dry but does tumble i feel it is the heating element if there is one can a true rookie change it and what else might it be if not the thermostat?:rolleyes:
