Looked on the web for help. Took off the panel on the front under the door. I did some clean-up (it was greasy.) Saw the 2 springs, the broken "door cable and eyelet", and the other such cable, still unbroken, all rendered useless by the broken part. Removed all those parts (the eyelets slip over some levers on the door, the cables pass over nylon pulleys -- nothing is attached, just held together by tension.) Reassembled the dishwasher (we kept using it, with care.) Found the manual for the dishwasher on-line, found the part number, ordered 2 even though the good one still looked OK. After a few days, parts arrived. No problems assembling -- the spring tension is moderate, if you can do a push-up you can do this.
