Since the igniter was old, it was weak and was not drawing enough amperage. This resulted in the gas valve not to get energized. I only had to unscrew the igniter from the burner and remove the little plate in the back of the oven wall that covered the hole that the wires went through. Then I was able to pull the connector out of the hole to disconnect it. Then it was just a matter of reversing the process to attatch the new igniter.
