The refrigerator door side of the side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, bottom cams that auto close the door were broken.
First, I removed all items on the door shelves and the shelves themselves to reduce the weight of the door. Second, I removed the cover on the top hinge assembly and removed the two screws that secured that hinge. Third I lifted the door from the bottom hinge assembly and placed the door horizontal on the kitchen table to all easier access to the bottom of the door. I then removed two screws holding the door closing cam and shim and replaced them with the new parts. Next was to removed the old hinge assembly on the refrigerator itself and replace it with a new hinge assembly. All down hill from this point. Time to reinstall the door, aligning the bottom of the door cam over the hinge assembly and setting the door down on it making sure the door sets on the hinge assembly cams. To the top of the refrigerator. reinstalled the top door hinge assembly and cover, job complete. Total time from start to finish including cleaning the inside of the door and shelves about 30 minutes.

As for the replacing of the light lens in the freezer section. This was almost to easy. I removed the ice drawer from the freezer which exposed the one phillips screw that holds the lens in place. Removed the screw and what was left of the old lens, inserted the new lens from the underneath the ice drawer compartment and screw, replaced the ice drawer and, the task was complete. Total time about 5 minutes.

Door would not automatically close.
Symptom: Door did not close automatically. Also had found small chunks of black plastic on the floor. Refrigerator door was slightly lower than the freezer door.

One false start because I did not realize both of the door-closing cams had disintegrated and I had only ordered the cam without the hinge.

Purchased part 290199 Hinge Assembly. It came with matching door-closing cam. (Had not known so I also purchased the cam 297995 separately). Next time I will know to only purchase the Hinge Assembly.

Replacement procedure took about 20 minutes including removing and replacing door shelves and their contents. Two people involved.

1. Remove all door shelves with contents and other contents on door.

2. Remove the top Phillips head screw holding the decorative plastic on the top.

3. Remove the two top hinge screws on top of refrigerator using metric #8 socket wrench. Second person made sure door did not fall off.

4. Lift the door off the bottom hinge pin. Second person holds door on it’s side.

5. Take off the bottom refrigerator cover

6. Remove the bottom hinge assembly screws using metric #8 socket wrench.

7. Mount the replacement bottom hinge assembly and tighten the two screws.

8. On the door bottom, remove the outer screw and loosen the inner screw using metric #8 socket wrench.

9. Replace the door-closing cam (or what is left of it) with the cam in line with the door and cam bumps away from the door.

10. Place the door back on the hinge pin (one person holds while the other person maneuvers the door bottom).

11. Replace the top hinge and reinsert the screws on top of the refrigerator. Dress the door so that it does not press hard on the rubber door gaskets (or the door will fail to shut automatically). Tighten the screws.

12. Replace the decorative plastic over the top hinge.

13. Open the door and replace the bottom refrigerator cover.

14. Replace the door shelves and all contents.

15 Close the door.

Freezer door would not close all the way.
Pulled the door off easily and noticed that the spacer on the Center hinge was ground down to nothing and that a small screw in the bottom plate of the door was half way out. This screw would catch on the cabinet Center hinge bracket and stopped the door from closing. Problem was solved by tightening the screw and putting in a new "spacer" that kept the small screws from contacting the Center hinge bracket. The freezer door now closes like new. Read more...

Door would not close fully on its own
I inspected the hinges and found broken cams and door stop on the bottom hinge. I found the parts list for the door and ordered the parts I thought I needed. I found that I did not look at the parts list for the body of the unit and missed a key item and that required me to order another part that made the repair. I should have dug a little deeper before I placed my order and it would have been even easier. I was amazed at the speed I received the parts I needed. I ordered the hinge pin mid-morning and the part was on my porch the next afternoon. Read more...

RCA Refrigerator Door Hinge Shim

PartSelect Number PS298522
Manufacturer Part Number WR2X7491
This is the replacement door hinge shim, or riser cam shim for your refrigerator. It is made of metal and is approximately 2 inches in length, and 1 inch in width. Your refrigerator will have a door hinge shim on each door, and each shim is sold individually. The door hinge shim will have three holes in it; one larger hole, and two smaller ones. The door hinge shim is found on the bottom of your refrigerator door, and the main reason for replacing it is if it is torn or damaged. When you are completing this repair, the door will be briefly unsupported. As a result, it is recommended to remove everything from the door to make it as light as possible, and to ensure that the items in the door don’t fall out. This is an OEM part from the manufacturer.
