This is the drive gear kit for the ram that compacts the trash inside your compactor. If your compactor ram is getting stuck, there is excess noise during its cycle, or if your compactor does not stop at the end of its cycle, the driving gear may be the issue. The gear is white, plastic and approximately 4.5 inches in diameter. This drive gear kit includes both gears, pin spring, retaining clip (c-ring), ram stop, ram cam, and instructions. Make sure to disconnect the power to your trash compactor before beginning the repair.

Compactor stuck in lower position
Moved the compactor out from under cabinet and unplugged the powercable.Laid compactor over on its side Removed the top (4 screws) and base plate (3 screws) as well as the coverplate for the motor(3 screws)Found that large drive was broken in half. Used two screwdrivers to start split ring then pliers to pull it off the rest of the way.
Removed the drive gear and the washer.
Used a nail to drive out the pin for the smaller drive gear kit. Removed and replaced with new, used new pin to lock it on to the shaft. Changed out the bearings and washers on one powerscrew, put chain back on. Then was then a simple matter to put the new gear back on the chain then slide the whole thing back on the drive shaft. Replace the washer then slip the split ring back in place and seat it home with the pliers. Greased chain, gear drive and powerscrew. Put all covers back on with the screws. Pushed button it worked.

locking nut was stripped
After calling a repair man and being told my appliance was to old for him to repair I discovered your website. I simply entered the model number and a picture of the part I was looking for was easily found. I ordered online and received the replacement parts 5 day's later. I simply swapped out the old locking nuts with the new ones from your website and the repair was complete. What could have been an easy $100 repair cost a fraction of that and the trash compactor is working just fine. Read more...

Power Nut

This part is a power nut, and it is intended to be used in conjunction with trash compactors. The function of this nut is to fasten to the side of the ram where it is threaded. When the power screw rotates, it is fed through the power nut, which pulls the ram down to compress the trash. This part is just over an inch in diameter, and is just one inch thick. This part is white and made entirely of plastic. The reason for needing to replace this part is if your compactor ram gets stuck, or if it does not stop at the end of the compacting cycle.

Compactor out of line and would not shut off.
Pulled compactor out on a piece of cardboard. Used socket set to take top off and evaluate the problem. Power nut was not holding on one side. We ordered two power nuts. Decided to repair only the unlevel side. Fast and easy and cheaper than a new compactor. Whirlpool compactor is 28 years old and working like a charm. Thanks for the diagram and accessibility to parts. Read more...

Drive Gear - White

If your trash compactor is jammed or stuck with the ram in the down position, you may have a faulty or damaged drive gear. The drive gear is located at the bottom of your compactor, and helps the drive motor power the compacting ram. If you notice that your drive gear is broken, damaged, or faulty, look to replace it straight away to avoid causing any more damage to the trash compactor. If you notice that the gear is missing teeth, you should replace the part. This part is made of plastic, white in color, and has an approximate outside diameter of 4 1/2 inches.

The drive gear broke on our trash compactor.
The Ram was stuck down in our compactor so I pulled the entire unit from under the counter, flipped it on it's side, opened the bottle panel, saw the drive gear was snapped, and manually cranked the ram up. This brought the ram to the up position and allowed me to open the door and pull out the trash canister/bin. Once I had the replacement part (drive gear) I simply removed the washer and lock, slid the gear on the bolt, aligned it with the smaller engine gear and finally placed the washer and lock back in place. Reinstalled the bottom panel, placed it back under counter, leveled it and it was good to go. If you know where the drive gear is and can use a screwdriver (only to take bottom panel screws off) then you can fix this issue. Very eary. Read more...

The drive gear is located at the bottom of your compactor and helps the drive motor power the ram by operating the chain that powers the compacting ram. If you notice that your drive gear is broken or damaged, look to replace it straight away to avoid causing any more damage to the trash compactor. If your trash compactor is jammed or stuck with the ram in the down position, it could be due to the drive gear being damaged or faulty. The most common issue with drive gears is that the teeth break. This occurs through regular use. Once teeth are broken from the gear, you should replace the part. This kit comes with everything you will need to properly install your new drive gear.

trash compactor ram not moving - broken plastic drive gear
1) pulled the compactor from under the counter and unplugged it. 2) tipped it on its side 3) removed 5 screws (3 on the motor side and two on the bottom) an took off the bottom cover plate. 3) using the pliers i pulled of the retainer clip from the large drive gear(it had broken on only the hub remain attached) 4) i then just slid in the new gear, snapped in the retainer clip and buttoned up the cover plate. Note I did not replace the other parts that came in the package because the existing ones seemed ok. Read more...
Gear Box Kit
PartSelect Number PS257534
Manufacturer Part Number WC22X5028
This is a gearbox kit for a trash compactor. The outer casing of the part is made of metal and measures 5 inches wide and 7 inches tall. The gearbox is run by the motor, and allows the trash compactor to move up and down by the rotating gears. If you hear grinding or your compactor is not moving, you may need to replace this part. You will need to uninstall your appliance from the cabinet to complete this repair. You will need to disassemble the trash compactor drawer. This is a genuine part sourced from the original manufacturer.
