The start relay briefly boosts the compressor, and then shuts off as soon as the motor gets up to speed and the Overload provides added protection for the compressor motor because, in addition to protecting against excessive current, it also protects against excessive temperature use.

Did the trick and then some.
Well my thermostat was going out. This particular fridge has a history of thermostats and relays and starters. Had it fixed under warranty once. Kenmore twice. They have a great program for those not confident in diy. Didn't buy it from them either. Anyhow replaced thermostat and defrost timer about 5 to six years ago myself with parts and instructions from Parts Select. This time around I knew what was up and were to order parts. Ordered a thermostat and defrost timer. There both close together so I do them both. Did the thermostat first, fired it up and on she came. Then did the timer. I want to add for anyone doing the defrost timer. When you first turn your unit back on it may take up to ten minutes or so to kick on. Reason being I believe is your timer might be in a defrost cycle. I had that happen both times to me. Another issue I had was when the fridge kicked on it was really dimming the lights including messing with my window AC units. Also you could hear the starter clicking quite hard. Went ahead and ordered a starter and relay. Didn't have to much in guidance other then find the compressor. There attached to it. Pulled the bottom back panel and there sat the compressor on the left side. Since it had been changed before the spade connections were fine. The starter and relay slide onto prongs coming out of the compressor body. Complete time involved maybe fifteen minutes. Though I did spend another thirty minutes with the vacuum cleaner on the cooling coils. Parts Select sent me 2 relays and starters. Depending on your fridges cubic feet will determine which ones to use. Now the only thing I hear from my 19 year old fridge is the hum of the cooling fan and compressor. Quiet as a mouse and no more blackouts when it kicks on. She still will hit 10 below in the freezer and keeps my fridge between 33 and 32 degrees. I keep it that cold because here in the south especially on weekends the fridge gets opened and closed a bunch. Even after an active day she still stays below 40.Thank you Parts Select.

Removed back cover, noticed the start relay was a Klixon figured it was bad(they don't make a good relay); Checked voltage going to compressor: 115V; Checked ohms: C-S-R 4.3-4.2-4.5; Checked ground: open;
Replaced start relay. Compressor fired right up when plugged in.

cOMPRESSOR WOULD NOT START
Replaced the start Kit , cleaned the condenser coils with a two ft length of 1/2" copper tube taped to the vaccum hose, vaccumed the area at the compressor( this took about 1/2 hour) replaced the cardboard back . (corrected)
The refrigerator works fine. Thanks

Refriderator compressor would not start
Pulled cardboard cover off back of ref to access the compressor compartment. Unplugged appliance, and pull the start device and overload off of compressor. Replaced both parts received from Partselect.com. Refrigerator works great now.

Refrigerator was clicking from underneath and not cooling or freezing.
First I turned off my refrigerator, called for service, and had the problem diagnosed as a bad start relay. The repairman checked the compressor to see if it too was bad. The compressor was fine so I ordered the part I needed from PartSelect. After receiving the new start relay and overload from PartSelect, I unplugged the refrigerator, p
... Read moreulled it out and removed the screws from the lower back panel with the socket set and screwdriver. I removed the white self contained start relay box from the compressor by gently prying it off with a flat edge screw driver. I carefully disconnected the red and white wires from the broken start relay with pliers and followed the step by step directions that came with the replacement parts (the start relay and overload were separate components, not inside a self contained box like the original part). I proceeded to attach each part to the compressor, reconnect the red and white wires, and attach the new cover. I vacuumed out the area around the compressor and the condensor coils, plugged in the refrigerator, and turned it on. It worked immediately. I screwed the back cover on and pushed it back in place. Within 24 hours the ice maker was nearly full and I saved $225 by doing it myself.

Fan and Light working but would not cool down inside
This problem first accrued when the unit was under warranty and the repair person told me this would happen again. ... Read moreeptacle. I removed the screws, with a ¼ inch spin-tight that held the backing in front of the compressor compartment. I disconnected the two wires then pulled the Start-Dev PS991485 out and it rattled, a good sign the relay was bad. I looked up the Part on the Web Site and ordered the replacement relay, I thought. When the package arrived I found all the parts for the entire Starting and over Temp Protection circuits along with a new plastic cover box. This was a very good experience and I saved maybe $250.00 in repair costs by doing it my self, along with the replacement instruction that came with the parts.

Refrigerator stopped cooling

Refrigerator will only kick on if i turn it off and back on again, from the control on the inside. Is this a good part to start with to correct?

Hello Ken, Thank you for the question. You may have an issue with the Thermostat Assembly, PartSelect Number PS11739232. This thermostat assembly is used in refrigerator units and freezers as a sensor. The thermostat senses the temperature increase in the evaporator during the cycle of defrosting and turns off when ice is melted. If you have any of the following symptoms, replacing your appliance could solve the problem: fridge does not start, is too warm, too cold, runs too long, or will not start. Both the Thermostat and Start Device can be tested with a Multi Meter. Hope this helps, good luck with this repair!

I am replacing the "Overload & relay assembly. The wire colors are not the same. It calls out a RED, WHITE, BLUE connection however, I have a BLACK wire instead of BLUE. Do I assume the BLACK goes in place of where the BLUE connects on this new setup?

I'm at a point where I replaced 5 parts to finally get both sides operational again. The final part was COMPRESSOR STARER KIT which is completely different than original part. QUESTION: If this is wired incorrectly OR the DEFROST TIMER jumper, would the compressor tank itself become HOT to the touch? I still have the back off and nervous how hot this gets.

According to our research, if the wires are interchanged, then the compressor will fail to start because the ohmic value of the capacitive reactance conveyed to the start winding will be very high. Hence, the compressor will suffer very low current for its start winding, rendering very poor starting torque. We hope this information helps!
