Knob and timer worn/broken where engaging.
Removed clip from old knob with needle nose pliers and removed knob. Pulled indicator dial off of the timer shaft. Removed three screws with nut driver from top of back panel and opened control panel.
One screw holds the timer mechanism in place. Unplugged wiring harness from timer and removed screw. Removed timer. There are tabs that the timer sits in. Make sure you have reinstalled the timer correctly in place.
Installed new timer and replaced screw. Closed control panel and replaced the three screws in back panel.
Slid indicator guide down over timer shaft making sure to line up the tab on dial with notch in nylon shaft. Slide know over metal shaft and replace the clip which holds the knob in place. Operate washer according to instructions. In the future be sure to turn your knob slowly when setting the wash cycle. Turning it too quickly can wear out or break the parts once more.

Dryer Wouldn't Start
Unplugged dryer. Removed knobs and display panel. Removed bad start switch. This was a bit tricky for a novice. Had to do a bit of twisting. Once the new part was installed, I screwed in the display panel. The dryer worked, but I discovered that the part wasn't securely in place. It took three tries before I finally figured out how to secure the part. Now, everytime I start my dryer, I sing "I am Woman, Hear me Roar!" Woo Hoo!!! Sounds like a little thing to all you Do-It-Yourselfers out there, but to me, this really empowered me. Hmmm, what's next? Maybe the edge of the garage door??? See Ya!

Starter switch was broke.
The repair would have been extremely easy, if only the part was correct. The original starter switch was discontinued-WE4M402, which had 4 prongs to connect to my dryer's 4 electrical wires. The manufacturer substituted a new part-WE4M519, which has only 3 prongs. PartSelect suggested I contact GE and ask what I should do to properly connect the starter switch. The GE help was totally useless, just repeating that the original part was discontinued and a new substitute part was issued; they could not provide any information as to how to install a switch that previously required 4 electrical wires but now only provides for 3 electrical wires. Of course GE would be happy to schedule a service call and have a repairman come out.

start switch failed
I removed the three screws that hold the front switch cover to the backing plate. I then slid the front cover to the right and pulled it out and forward. I marked all the wires and removed them. Now the front cover is free. starting from the left i removed the knobs and the switches. The switches have a tab on them and they twist out of their socket. The front cover plate was also broken so I replaced it. In the new front cover plate I installed the switches starting from the right. When I got to the start switch I installed a new switch and knob.I then installed the rest of the knobs. then I installed the wires and put the tabs in their place and slid the cover plate to the left and installed the three screws.I then tested it and it worked great .
