starter rewind cord broke
I found the model number of the Briggs & Stratton engine on the inside of the engine housing. Ordered a new starter-rewind unit, as the old cord broke and the thing was well worn. The instructions were clear enough, but to get the old starter off I had to drill out four rivets, which just spin around when you try. I used a hacksaw, chisel, pliers, whatever worked on each rivet; this took a while. When they were finally removed, the new starter pull unit was relatively easy to install with the small nuts and bolts provided. On the Yard Machines log splitter, putting back the engine housing is quite tricky; you have to jostle the thing into place, get the pull handle above the cover and line up the bolt holes.

My coil assembly is attached to the housing with rivets. This coil replacement assembly looks like it has screws. How do I install it?

Hi Robert, thank you for your inquiry. We have found that your model recoil starter has been updated and now replacement coil assembly, part number PS8981884, comes with screws. Please follow the instructions in order to install the replacement coil assembly: 01. Disconnect the spark plug wire. 02. Remove the starter rope from the rope guide. If the rope would not slip past the guide and the handle, loosen the guide. 03. Remove the engine cover by removing the screws securing the engine cover and then slide the rope through the hole in the engine cover. 04. Remove the fuel tank by lifting the tank off, being careful to keep the fuel tank upright so it does not leak. 05. Remove the dipstick by removing the screws that secure the dipstick tube to the housing. 06. Remove the engine blower housing. 07. Remove the screws and then place the blower housing on a firm work surface and remove the mounting hardware that holds the recoil starter assembly in place. 08. Mount the new recoil starter assembly. 09. Reassemble the mower, position the engine blower housing on the engine, and bolt it into place. Now remove the paper towel from the dipstick opening, slide the dipstick into the engine and secure it with the screw. Feed the starter rope handle through the engine, cover up to the rope guide, and then reinstall the fuel tank. Position the engine cover on the engine and screw it into place. 10. Attach the spark plug wire and make sure the mower works properly. Good luck with this repair!
