When door is closed, there is a gap above the door gasket and the box. The door can be lifted to close this gap but it does not hold at this height. I do not own a socket set and cannot find the specification for the size needed for the screw holding on the door bracket at the bottom. What is the size needed and how do i determine what part is failing so i purchase just what is needed to repair the problem?
For model number FRT18S6AWU
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your question. To get size specifications like that you would have to contact the manufacturer. Unfortunately they do not give us that information. However it sounds like your doors may not be level and that is why you are getting a gap. I would suggest first checking to see if your fridge itself is level. If it is, then you will have to take a look at your hinges and your bushings. It is likely that they are either broken, worn out, or unlevel. Good luck with your repair.

Door was making a popping sound when opened and closed
Unscrewd the top hinge cove and removed two bolts from the hinge, lifted door off of the bottom hinge and laid the whole door on the floor using a beach towel to protect it from scratches. Unbolted the bottom hinge plate, replaced it with the new one. Then pulled out the old hinge bearing and replaced with a new one. Installed the door back on the bottom hinge while the magnet on the door strip held it place and rebolted the the upper hinge and reinstalled the hinge cover. All done in less than 10 minutes. No more popping sounds when I open and close the door!
The ice dispenser would only dispense crushed ice, Fridge door cluncked when opening and closing
For the ice dispenser, I read a blog that pointed me right to the solenoid that controls the linkage for the crushed /cubed ice.I first unplugged the fridge. Then removed the ice maker basket. Removed 2 ea screws from each side of the supports of the lower brackets. Then lifted the tray assy off the mounting bracket, moving the front of the bracket down you can then unhook the power/control connector. The tray then comes right out. Once out you remove two screws that hold a plastic plate on. With this removed you can see the solenoid that actuates the linkage for the ice cube and crushed ice. You then remove 2 ea machine screws that hold the solenoid in. Remove grd. wire. and pull power wires off tabs. You can then remove the solenoid by sliding it out of the plastic retainer. With it out you install the new plunger and reassemble in the reverse order. 15 mins tops.
The main Refidgerator door, made a cluncking sound. Lube didn't help. I removed the door by removing the top screw from the plastic cover, then slide it forward, then remove the two screws that hold the hinge on and then lifting the door off, once off the lower nylon hinge bearing comes right out of the door, the plate is removed with a screw driver. Installed in reverse order and cluncking was gone. 10 mins
Nylon door hinge bearing on the bottom of refrigerator door broke
First I removed the contents from the door. Second, I removed the exposed bolt on the top hinge(per the manual instructions) and then I removed the plastic hinge cover. Up next was to remove the remaining two bolts from the top hinge. I should, at this point, say it is much easier to have someone help steady the door for you so it doesn't fall off the refrigerator. Now remove the door and the old nylon bearing. Replace with the new bearing and replace the door. This repair couldn't have been easier.
The parts came within 2 days. The delivery was great. I took the food off the door, then removed the top hinge. Lifted door off bottom hinge and laid the door on a blanket on the floor. I then had access to the closing mechanism top and bottom that is just two plastic cams that lift the door as it opens. The weight of the door then is used on the cams to help close the door with the appliance level. It was very simple and assembly was just reverse order.
Ice Actuator broken, Door Closing Cam, Door Closure/Hinge Bearing
Unplug refrigerator. Take out spill tray by sliding out. remove bottom 3 screws, gently but firmly push up and against refrigerator(Top section of cover snaps in by pulling cover down while holding cover against refrigerator). There is a ribbon wire connecting the two boards, care not to tear it out of connectors. There are two tabs on the plastic connector holding the ribbon wire to the outside board, pull the tabs out a little and gently pull the ribbon loose, carefully. There are 3 screws holding in the back board, remove them, them remove water hose from water actuator so the assembly can come out. Gently spread the plastic holder to be able to take the broken paddle out. Watch closely how the third arm on the actuator(Lower left arm)is resting on the back of the flapper.Replace the Actuator exactly the same. Just reverse the steps to install the rest of the parts.(Had a time getting the water hose back into it place. I used pliers to push and wiggle it back into it opening).Don't forget to plug the frig back in again. DOOR CLOSING CAM AND HINGE BEARING ARE VERY EASY. It take about 10 to 15 minutes to do. Empty door drawers before procedure the screw holding the plastic cover, remove cover. I used a 3/8" nut driver and my cordless drill to take out the two lag bolts holding the top hinge.Lift door off bottom hinge. Replace Door Closure/Hinge Bearing. Reverse procedure to finish installation.
The door had a loud popping noise everytime you opened it.
The biggest part of the repair was getting everything out of the shelves in the door. I had to remove one phillips head screw from the plastic hinge cover on the top of the appliance. As per the owners manual I traced around the hinge with a pencil so I would be able to align the door to the same postion. Removed two screws with a nut driver and removed the top hinge. The magnetic strip held the door in place until I grabbed it and pulled it open then lifted it up off of the bottom hinge. I layed the door on the island counter and pried the bearing hinge out of the door stop and replaced it with the new one. I probably could have stopped there but figured the plate might have been worn so I remove one phillips head screw from the bottom hinge, lifted the plate off, and replaced it with the new one. I assembled everything in reverse order and voila, no more popping noises.
Removed stuff on door, removed 2 screws on top of door, lifted door off replaced one door closure/hinge bearing and one door closing plate and put door back on and wala no more thump.
