This is the drive gear kit for the ram that compacts the trash inside your compactor. If your compactor ram is getting stuck, there is excess noise during its cycle, or if your compactor does not stop at the end of its cycle, the driving gear may be the issue. The gear is white, plastic and approximately 4.5 inches in diameter. This drive gear kit includes both gears, pin spring, retaining clip (c-ring), ram stop, ram cam, and instructions. Make sure to disconnect the power to your trash compactor before beginning the repair.

Compactor won’t automatically return after compacting . Must press off to complete cycle. Gear drive ok
For model number GC900QPHBO
Hello Rod, thank you for writing. We have researched the model you have provided and have found the part you are looking for is the Directional Switch PartSelect Number PS11744742. The function of the directional switch on your trash compactor is to ensure the ram lowers to compress your trash, then returns to the top position. If your trash compactor does not complete this task, will not stop at the end of the compacting cycle, or is noisy during operation, you may need to replace the directional switch. We hope to hear from you soon.
Ram always goes down and up ok. At end of return to up cycle it frequently runs and pounds/shakes machine several times before it stops. This all started when the foot treadle start switch acted up. Repaired and replaced the metal piece attached to treadle and which contacts the start button on frame of machine at bottom.
For model number kucs03ftss0
Hello Ken, Thank you for contacting us. I suggest checking the Directional Switch, PartSelect Number PS11744742 with a multi meter and check for continuity. You can also check the Drive Gear Kit for wear or damage. Hope this helps!

We start the compactor and it goes down but then starts grinding when its operating and won't stop unless you turn it off and then back on. Then it will return to the top. Replaced gear a year ago but it seems wobbly. Not sure if that's the problem though after seeing something about a reverse switch.
For model number 13619101
Hello Timothy, thank you for contacting us. Compactor stuck in lower position
Moved the compactor out from under cabinet and unplugged the powercable.Laid compactor over on its side Removed the top (4 screws) and base plate (3 screws) as well as the coverplate for the motor(3 screws)Found that large drive was broken in half. Used two screwdrivers to start split ring then pliers to pull it off the rest of the way. Removed the drive gear and the washer. Used a nail to drive out the pin for the smaller drive gear kit. Removed and replaced with new, used new pin to lock it on to the shaft. Changed out the bearings and washers on one powerscrew, put chain back on. Then was then a simple matter to put the new gear back on the chain then slide the whole thing back on the drive shaft. Replace the washer then slip the split ring back in place and seat it home with the pliers. Greased chain, gear drive and powerscrew. Put all covers back on with the screws. Pushed button it worked.
Trash compactor started making "bumping" sounds when the RAM went through a cycle and tried to come back up. Finally, one day heard a "pop" went the RAM traveled to the bottom. The gear broke in half. Purchased the gear parts "KIT" online and repair took 15 minutes. Easy to do. Unfortunately, this was not only problem. The "cause" of the gear breaking was the Momentary Start/Stop Switch was bad. It's failure led to the main switch not working. The unit could not tell when the RAM had reached the top of it's cycle. The other problem was that I didn't put trash in the compactor. Suggest HIGHLY to never operate the unit's RAM mechanism without the compactor being at least 1/2 full per the instruction manual. Running it empty can cause a major problem, such as the gear breaking/stripping.

Drive Gear Broken
Replaced the gear and unit worked execpt the plunger hit the side of the garbage container. This appears the be the reason the gear broke in the first place. Defective assembly from the factory.
To correct I had to remove the newly installed gear system remove inside cardboard side cover, Remove the screws that hold the bearing for the lift screw so I could remove the chain. After removing the chain I could adjust the plunger to be level and not hit the side of the garbage container on its way down.

Plastic Drive gear broke
The plastic drive gear broke and the unit was locked in the down position. The repair kit contained all of the parts required to fix the problem plus other replacement parts for the gear drive unit. It was very easy (about 20 min.) to replace the gear and other parts. The unit works fine now.

After almost 20 years, the plastic gears had stripped - go figure
Simply removed the two plastic gears (held on by some sort of clip), put the new gears in place using the spacing instructions that were provided in the kit ....... and it is working!

Trash Compactor Drive Gears
The 10 year old drive gear had cracked at the hub and would spin on the compactor shaft causing a loud ratcheting sound with no compaction. The new gear set came quickly and even had a modified drive gear with a metal insert at the hub so I expect long life. They fit and work perfectly! So instead of buying a new $1500 compactor I spent $60 on new drive gears and a couple hours of my time. I am very pleased.

Compactor Repair Kit - perfect fit
4 business day delivery. Part was an exact replacement as advertised. It just took this shade tree mechanic awhile & a YouTube video to figure how to disassemble a compactor. Video was good, too.

Saved a 20 Year Old Compactor
Our Kenmore Trash Compactor finally quit working after more than 20 years in service. I went to the home center to purchase another compactor from the same manufacturer. There are NO compactors to purchase. I guess compactors are not considered essential by the Covid-19 priority monitors. I discovered the broken gear in our compactor, ordered the kit, and installed it. It was a fairly simple install, except that our old compactor had stressed, cracked, and flared the plastic tubes that function as plunger stops. I had to use a small chisel to remove the flared portion of the tubes before I could complete the repair. The parts were a perfect fit and it returned our compactor to like new functionality and it left about $1300 dollars in my pocket that I didn't have to spend on a new compactor.
