Spinner attached to the upper wash arm needed replacing.
After watching the video on the PartSelect website, followed these steps: 1. Removed both drawers. 2. Loosened upper wash arm by depressing holding clips. 3. Rotated wash arm clockwise a little bit, then removed it by depressing the holding clip. 4. Attached new spinner with the supplied fastener. 5. Reattached wash arm. Very easy.

Upper Wash Arm was detaching account worn attachment fastener
1. Remove upper dish basket (Where glasses and cups go) from dish washer by removing end caps from roller tracks (spring loaded button releases them. 2. Cover bottom of dishwasher with a towel to prevent parts loss. 3. remove old male wash arm fastener and replace with a new by slightly bending the spray assembly away from the top of the dishwasher enclosure. 4. Put female portion of wash arm fastener in hole in wash arm and push into spray assembly so that it snaps into the male end of fastener by pinching the two fasteners together between thumb and opposing finger. 5. Remove towel and reinstall upper basket.

Washer arm fell off
The arm stays in by a simple plastic pin that fits into the arm that hangs on top of the dishwasher. That pit drops into an indentation on the arm, and snaps into a plastic bolt type of thing that holds the arm and allows it to spin. The plastic wore loose over a decade, and the new parts just snap in. It's a little tricky to feel where the top piece fits. I put a dishtowel below over the racks, in case the part dropped, so I wouldn't lose it in the bottom area of the dryer. It snapped in very easily once the parts were in place.

Upper washer arm pin wore out.
1 minute repair if the old wash arm is already off. Even fixed it with the dishwasher full. It's to bad you can't just buy the pin that holds it on.

Upper Wash Arm fell into washer
Followed the video provided by this site. Since the old Upper Wash Arm had come unfastened and fell, did not have to remove the assembly that holds it. Simply removed the lower basket and upper basket, held the new part in place and gently depressed the arm of the upper assembly along the roof of the washer, and snapped the fastner with my finger.

The upper wash arm came off and there was a piece missing.
I Googled the part number and "repair instructions". Someone else, who had experienced the same problem, wrote a paragraph on how to do it. The most important thing he had to say was "place something under the arm to catch any parts you might drop". I'm finding that you can usually find instructions on the web to fix almost anything. Sometimes, you're even lucky enough to get a YouTube video with step by step instructions. Thanks for the speedy service!

I found part 8538389, resting on the top rack of our kitchenaide dishwasher. Can i easily reinstall it. Can i run dishwasher without it in place?
PartSelect logo
Hello Mary, Thank you for your question. You can easily reinstall the upper wash arm by following the installation video on our site for the part, and we suggest you install it because although it is possible to run the dishwasher without it, it could cause the dishes to not clean as well, and possible damage the water outlet the spray arm attaches too. We hope this helps.

Lower spray arm seems to be working and the dishes clean fine on bottom rack, but the upper rack doesn't get clean. I don't believe the upper sprayer is working so checked water channel to top and seem to be open. Could it be the water pump not providing enough water pressure for the upper sprayer arm even if the bottom arm is working?

Hi Duane, thank you for your question. That could be. I would suggest double checking that all of your filters and your sump is free of debris/clogs. You may also just want to double check the holes in the upper wash arm and make sure they are not clogged over as well. If they are all fine, then it is likely your pump that is the issue. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.

Re: Upper wash arm kit: I installed the upper wash arm upside down. If i pull the arm from the pin and holding washer, will i damage the kit?
For model number KUDM01FKSS0

Hello, Thank you for your question. You should be okay to remove the Wash arm, but ensure you remove all parts as well so nothing is damaged if a screw is missed. We hope this helps.
