Flat Style Oven Igniter Specifications

The flat style oven igniter is also known as a range oven igniter. The function of this part is to glow extremely hot in order to ignite the gas for the oven burner. With this flat style oven igniter, you must reuse the original bracket from your original igniter. Be very careful during installation to not touch the black element part of the flat style oven igniter as it is very fragile. If your oven does not heat you should check to see if your igniter is glowing. If your igniter is glowing and the oven is not heating there is a chance that the igniter is not strong enough to heat your oven and it will need to be replaced.

Broiler inoperative
For the third time in less than a year I had to replace the broiler igniter. The range is 27 years old and has given us excellent service. When the igniter failed it's replacement lasted 3 months. The next replacement lasted about 6 months. This last replacement has been in service about 1 week. We shall see. The last one had an open wire within the ceramic mould. There was continuity from one wire, through the black portion, but not to the second wire. It seems like it was a fault in manufacturing.

the iron gets red hot but not enough to open the gas valve.
Took the pan out of the bottom of the oven. Took the screws out of the assembly for the iron, disconnect the power wires under the stove and pull out the old iron. Reverse the proceedure but be careful with the new iron, it is very fragile. Connect the wires put the screws back and you are done. Make sure before you start the job that you unplug the appliance !!!!

Broiler Igniter failed
Had to take entire back panel off, to disconnect wiring. Once disconnected, removed two screws holding up igniter in oven. Pulled it through and removed from holder, Be careful new igniter very fragile. Reconnected, put panel back on, then turn on to verify, all went well, fully operational.

Oven not turning on
I took out the oven racks. There are 2 cross head screws and 1 screw with a hex head holding the igniter. Pulling out the igniter carefully and the wire nuts also came out. Replaced the wires using the existing wirenuts and slid the igniter into place. Replaced the 3 screws and DONE. Wish the igniters were a little cheaper as this is the third one to go weak. The new one draws about 3.2 amps while the old one only drew 2.85Amps, not enough to open the gas valve. Oven works Fine now. Thanks parts select for the rapid delivery.

Oven would not light
After the appliance store told me that the repair would cost about $500 to fix an oven that wouldn't light we didn't have the money to repair it or buy a new one so we went without an oven (only the oven) for almost 1 year. The igniter would glow but the oven would not light. my son found your site online and passed it on to me. It was so simple it's almost funny. I opened the oven door and removed the burner cover. Then reached in and removed the three screws that held the igniter in place. Turned off the gas, disconedted it so I could pull the stove out to get behind it. Found the wires to the igniter and undid the 2 wire nuts. Removed the igniter cover from the old one and slid it onto the new one. Be very careful because the igniter is very delicate and be sure to not toucjh the heating eliment. Slid the new part into place, reinstalled the screws, connected the new wires with the old wire nuts, reconnected the gas and turned on the oven. BAM it worked like a charm.

Oven does not heat
Daughter and family came to visit Gramps for the weekend; Saturday morning, arose and opened a couple of cans of grand buscuits. Set aside to let rise then turned oven on to preheat. Came back later and oven did not work. Stove top worked, broiler worked, but no oven. What to do, didn't want to waste dough; perhaps salvage for dumplings, no; make poorboy doughnuts, no; Aha, lets use the outside gas grill, never done it, worth the try, remember old camping days except using gas. Worked like a charm, crisis over. Now back to oven. Since everything worked except the oven burner problem could be in the igniter, or oven control. Removed covers to burner assembly, pulled igniter, checked for continuity across the two leads. No go. Wait, need to check oven control, placed voltmeter across incomming leads, turned oven controls on and had voltage. Conclusion, igniter bad. Also noticed a small rust hole in the burner tube next to igniter, not good. Went on-line to PartsSelect, entered make and model number. No model but gave choice close to model. Viewed pictures, found one that came close. Placed order. Parts came in a very short time. Matched new parts to old. perfect. Removed burner tube and installed new one, one screw, simple. Wire nut the incomming leads to igniter and install, three screws, simple. Turned oven on, igniter glows bright, gas comes on, good blue flame, no need to adjust air inlet vents on burner tube. Turned off oven, replaced covers, then turned on oven, baked cornbread and enjoyed. Thanks, back in business. Dave

Is there a way to test the flat style oven igniter before replacing it? Whirlpool oven does not come on.
For model number SF378PEWN0
PartSelect logo
Hi Mark, Thank you for the question. The oven igniter should have a resistance reading of 3.2 to 3.6 ohms. If the igniter ohms are good, you can check the resistance of the oven safety valve. The gas valve should have 1.5 ohms of resistance. If the gas valve is good, the oven thermostat should be checked,It should read approximately 1080 – 1090 ohms at room temperature. The igniter requires 120vac to operate. If all other parts check out but the igniter is not getting 120vac you may need to replace the control board. Hope this helps!

igniter glows but fire will not ligth
For model number RWD 212
PartSelect logo
Hello Rogelio, Thank you for your inquiry. If the igniter is glowing but not lighting the gas, it may not be drawing enough power to light the gas, in which case you should replace it. You can test it with a multimeter. We hope this helps and if you need help placing an order, customer service is open 7 days a week. Please feel free to give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you!

igniter glows red/orange the gas tube lights but the oven heats slowly with a smell of gas. All gas connections are tight . Once in a while the oven operates efficiently.
For model number ARGS7650WW
PartSelect logo
Hi Mark, Thank you for your question. If you are smelling gas during the pre-heating stage, what you are smelling could be odorant. Odorant is an additive that is added to natural gas and propane and it is normal to smell this when the oven is pre-heating. Depending on how much of the odorant was added to the gas by your supply company, the smell can vary from low to strong. If what you are experiencing is a gas smell, then you may have a weak igniter and it will need to be replaced. If what you are experiencing is a rotten egg smell, then you need to turn the power and gas supply off to the oven, ventilate your home by opening the windows, leave the house and contact the company who supplies your gas. We hope this helps! Good luck with the repair!
