Frost build up behind "in refrigerator" ice maker. Ice maker mold temperature above 20 degrees inhibiting ice making
Used the following video link to replace thermostat:

Since problem was frost build up on coils behind the ice maker I figured the problem had to be the thermostat or the heater coil. All diagnostic tests on ice maker worked fine. Ordered both...50-50 chance. Turned out to be the thermostat, but replace both. Working good now.

I have a recurring problem with the fresh food ice maker in my french door refrigerator. I finally just quit using the fresh food ice maker and only use the one in the freezer compartment, but still, ice builds up behind the evaporator fan and eventually causes the fan to quit running. I removed the air handler unit and the ice maker assembly to defrost it with a hair dryer. After it returned to normal temperatures, I did a forced defrost but defrost heater did not get hot. Should it have? I have not yet removed it to test it. If the defrost heater is faulty, is it necessary to replace the thermostat at the same time? The freezer and refrigerator always maintain proper temperatures no problem there. Any advise on the replacement of the air handler assembly, fresh food defrost heater and thermostat would be greatly appreciated. I have changed the air handler gaskets but plan to try replacing the whole air handler assembly with part #5303918784 Frigidaire refrigerator air handler housing. I have also read about problems with inadequate insulation on the back of this unit. Help! Thanks!

Hello Amy, Thanks for your question. Yes, it is common to replace both the thermostat and the defrost heater simultaneously, and the defrost heater does normally become hot. You may want to test these parts with a multimeter to check for electrical continuity, and replace any that do not show continuity. To install the parts, unplug the fridge. Remove the ice bucket, bins, and shelves. Remove the rails that hold the drawers. Remove the mounting clips. The back panel is then removed after removing the light cover. The defrost thermostat is on the end of the evaporator with the defrost heater close by. You will need to disconnect or cut the wires to remove them. You may need new connectors for the wires on the new thermostat to be installed. The air handler is close to the ice maker and involves rewiring the connections from the old air handler to the new one. The insulation can also be a problem with the unit, and you may want to replace it if it is faulty. I hope this helps.
