Product Description

Drive Motor Specifications

This drive motor is for trash compactors. The drive motor turns the gears and chain that raise and lower the compactor ram. If your trash compactor will not start or will not stay on during the compaction cycle, you may have a defective drive motor. The start or run switch is used to supply power to the motor to initiate the compaction cycle. If the windings in the motor are open or if the motor centrifugal switch is open, the unit will not start. To check for a defective motor, you will need to remove the unit from the cabinets and disconnect the power.

What is the purpose of the switch mounted to the motor?I thought that was the directional switch.
For model number TU8100XTP3

Hello Terry, thank you for your question. The switch on the motor is a centrifugal switch. The switch is used to disconnect the starting winding of the motor once the motor approaches its normal operating speed. The directional switch and the centrifugal switch work together to direct the ram one way, and then return it to the original position. I hope this helps.

On the down stroke the motor does not reverse. It makes a ratcheting noise and I have to push the off button. Then when I hit the on button it comes up. Is this a motor problem? I was told the motor has a built in reverse switch in it, is this correct?
For model number GX900QPPS2

Hello Andy, Thanks for your question. The motor does have a reversing switch, and the most common solution to your issue is replacing the drive gear from the drive gear kit, part number PS398589. I hope this helps.

Motor hums when turned on. I cleaned the entire unit including the gear box. I turned the gear several turns and it seems to be free. Motor still hums. Is this a bad motor?

Hi George, thank you for your question. Unfortunately more than likely. You may want to test your directional switch just in case. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.

I have replaced the drive gears 2x and the bump stoppers. The motor seems to want to go too far as it doesn't reverse at the bottom until after the gears skip or ultimately strip. Is this a centrifugal switch or motor problem?

I have replaced the gears and the ram stops on my trash compactor however, they have been stripped again. It appears that the motor w10439651 wants to continue past what should be the bottom reverse point. I observed a loud noise accompanied with gear slipping before it reverses to go back up. Is this caused by the centrifugal switch 777971 and can it be replaced without replacing the whole motor?

The ram wasn't stopping so we replaced the directional switch, which solved the problem. A week later it started acting up again. We figured the switch must be bad so we replaced with another one. That solved the problem. Turns out the switches were not defective, according to the ohm reader. We didn't think to test the switches before replacing them. What else might cause the ram from stopping if it's not the switches? And why does the problem get fixed when we replace the switch?
For model number GC900QPKQ0

Hello Amy, Thank you for the question. We suggest checking the Drive Gear Kit. If your compactor ram is getting stuck, there is excess noise during its cycle, or if your compactor does not stop at the end of its cycle, the driving gear may be the issue. We hope this helps!
