This magnetron in your microwave creates the radiation needed for cooking or warming your food. It is located inside the main cavity, typically near the transformer or waveguide. When the magnetron becomes defective, your food may not heat up properly or heat up at all. Additionally, buzzing or humming sounds may be noticeable while the microwave is in operation. With a malfunctioning magnetron, your microwave loses its primary function. To remove it, you first need to unplug your microwave from its outlet. Before touching any components, discharge the capacitor by placing a screwdriver, with an insulated handle, across the two terminals of the capacitor. Once the capacitor is discharged, replace the current magnetron by disconnecting it from any wires and removing any mounting screws or clips. This magnetron is sold individually and is supplied directly from the original equipment manufacturer.

Would not heat and made a buzzing or popping sound
Unplug the microwave. Remove the Philips head and safety Torx head screws along the bottom of the sides and rear of the microwave which hold the black cover on. Lift the cover up at the rear and slide it backwards to disengage the tabs on the front top. Remove the cover. Discharge the capacitor by shorting the terminals to each other
... Read moreand then ground. Do this with a well insulated object and be aware there may be a pop when you do this. Keep hands, etc. on the insulated part of the object (screwdriver handle, etc). There's a lot of stored energy in that capacitor. I'd advise first checking the diode to make sure its not bad. Replace it if it is. The Magnatron is held in with a couple of screws on the top and sides. Unplug the connector and remove the screws. Remove the Magnatron. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Unplug magnetron and remove the 5 screws. 6. Drop in new magnetron and re-assemble microwave in reverse order (steps 5-3). 7. Two people restore micro to wall/cabinet. Replace wood spacers, re-install two, large mounting screws (finger-tight). Test device. Secure the two large screws.

Replacement of Magnetron
I UNPLUGGED the microwave and removed the cover, using a phillips and a Torx screwdriver for the machine screws. I set these screws aside, so as not to confuse them with the later encountered screws. ... Read moreon the old magnetron would do as well. I marked the old magnetron "old", to avoid later confusion. I removed the two screws holding the shields to the magnetron. I removed 3 of the 4 screws holding the magnetron to the microwave, leaving one of the top screws. I held the magnetron securely and removed the last screw, pulling out a the part of the magnetron that penetrated the microwave. I installed the new magnetron in reverse order. One problem I encountered was locating one of the six screws, which had been pulled into the old magnetron by magnetism.

The unit seems to work like it should but its not heating up wife said she heard a pop then it wouldn't heat up

Thank you for your question. I would suggest taking a look at your fuse and the diode on your appliance. Be careful when doing any repair on a microwave. You have to make sure you safely discharge the capacitor inside of your microwave before preforming any installations or repairs. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.

Microwave ran on high for 10 mins with nothing in it. Now it won't heat anything inside. Interestingly, the outside of the microwave will heat up if you try and heat something.Any way to tell if this is magnetron vs fuse?

Hello David, thank you for your question. We would recommend testing the fuse. It's easy to tell if a glass fuse is blown; it will show scorch marks, and the filament will be melted. To check a ceramic fuse, use an ohmmeter or continuity tester. With an ohmmeter or multimeter, you should see a reading close to zero ohms if the fuse is intact, or infinite if it's blown. Microwave suddenly stopped working. I have no lights or anything coming from the microwave. Im sure its just a fuse but im really reluctant to try to open it up and work on it. Any suggestions?

Hi Ramon, Thank you for your question. There are a few parts that you could check for this issue. Please be advised, you must unplug the appliance from power and safely discharge the capacitor before attempting any repair as the capacitor can electrocute you if not properly discharged. You would be able to test these parts with a multi meter, remove them from the appliance before testing. First you should take a look at your fuse being the issue. It should be reading 0 ohms to be working correctly. You should also check your diode. You will also want to test all of your door switches to make sure that they are working. They should also be reading 0 ohms to be working correctly. If those parts are fine then the issue might either be in your capacitor or your magnetron itself. Good luck with your repair.
