Drum was very difficult to turn. One bearing in the motor had failed.
I removed the lower panel and control panel, then the front body panel. With those open, I removed the drum support and drum. I then removed the cover from the air guide, then unbolted the air guide from the motor assembly.

... Read morehe unit, and removed it. I removed the idler arm from the motor carrier, then unclipped the two clips holding the motor in the carrier.
At that point, while everything was out, I gave the carrier a thorough cleaning. I then placed the new motor, replaced the clips that hold it in place, and put everything back together in the reverse order of taking it apart.
While I was in the machine, since I had everything taken apart, I did also take the opportunity to replace the idler pulley and drum rollers proactively.
Remove front of cabinet, hinge the top back, remove the drum and drive belt, unplug the motor, remove cover on blower, remove snap ring on end of motor shaft, remove motor mount hold-downs, remove and replace motor in reverse order

Dryer wouldn't start. For months it had made noise and would require a long cool down between loads.
Several times I watched the video of "Steve" removing the old motor and installing the new one. Pretty much followed what he did. Buzzing noise when pressed start button no power
make sure you unplug cord simply take dryer apart. waited 3-4 days on new parts due to christmas time. found you want to make sure the plastic sleves on motor are in the holding slots properly and take a good look at belt tension pulley before taking drum out or take a picture. did not need switch for start button motor only.

Blower wheel had broken fins, motor bearings loose
This was fun! Kill the power! Remove door, remove from panel, remove front drum support, remove drum and belt, remove blower cover, remove blower wheel, remove electrical connector from motor, take two clips off motor mount to remove motor. Put it all back in with new parts. 200 bucks and back in business. Go for it. Bob
Removed door and front and drum. Removed fan assembly. Be careful when working fan off of motor shaft. Unhooked wiring from motor. Removed clips. Replaced motor. Reverse procedure to put dryer back together. Now works like new. Very, very, happy. Part came in 2 days using standard shipping. Way better than buying a new dryer.

On the back of the motor is a pulley that is grooved. I believe it is to keep the belt tracking on the drum. Can this part be replaced without buying another motor? Where can I buy the part? Instructions for replacing the part?

Thanks for your question. The pulley is only included with the motor itself. You will need to disassemble most of the dryer to install the part, but we have a video on the part page itself with exact steps on doing so.

Hello, I have a few questions. For this dryer I see that there are 2 motors with slightly different specs. My first question is which motor will work for my dryer? The 115V or the 120V motor? My dryer's model number is MDE5500AYW and the serial number is 42453580AA. If this additionally helps the part number of my existing motor is 6 3715110 and the model number is S8NXMWM-6869.
My other question is while diagnosing my dryer part by part to figure out what was wrong with it (it would power on but wouldn't run), when I tried to disconnect the motor wires I acidentally broke one of the two copper start/run windings from the copper braid. I tried to solder it back on to the braid but when I tried running the dryer it would make a humming noise and I could see smoke coming from the dryer and the copper wire I soldered turned black. Just curious if someone breaks off one of the start or run windings if they need to buy a whole new motor or if it's possible to fix it by reconnecting/soldering the wire or something. The motor was testing fine for continuity and stuff so it seems like a real shame to have to junk out a whole motor just because one of the flimsy copper wires broke off. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!
