Product Description

Clutch Assembly Specifications

A clutch assembly (Clutch, Washer Clutch) is found in your washing machine and is responsible for spinning the basket during the spin cycle. The clutch lining can wear over time. If the clutch lining is worn out, the clutch assembly will not rotate properly to release the brake. If you notice a burning smell, or the machine shaking and moving more than normal, this could indicate there is an issue with your clutch. If the washer spins when the washer basket is empty but not when it’s full, or if the assembly begins to turn blue, you may need to replace the clutch assembly. This assembly includes a brake cam driver, blue springs for large capacity washers, a black spring for compact washers, and the installation instructions. It’s constructed of plastic and metal, and comes in beige/silver.

The washer did not spin fast enough during the rinse cycle to adequately dry the load of clothes
I repaired my Kenmore washing machine replacing the clutch, Motor coupling and cogs. All of the parts came quickly and with good instructions. Best of all there were links to youtube repair walkthroughs. With out these step by step instructions this project would have taken much longer. Now the washer is like new! WATCH THE YOUTUBE PAUSE DO THE STEP AND REPEAT

Washer tub would not spin or agitate and made a high pitch spinning noise during those cycles.
Basically I followed the great instructions provided on the Part Select webpages. I would consider myself to have more common sense than mechanical skill. I didn't want to have to keep going back to purchase more parts so I decided to buy the motor coupler (under $5), new clutch assembly (Under $30), new motor (under $160). The shaft on the original motor wore down to a cylindrical shape which should have been more of a rectangular shape to fit precisely into the motor coupler and provide the grip strength for the washer tub to spin. Usually the no spin problem is linked to a faulty motor coupler. I was glad that I had to removed the motor to reach the motor coupler because in my case the coupler had not failed. That is when I saw the motor shaft had worn. Since I had all the new parts I replaced them all and since 6/13/19 the washer is running like new. Oh, the problem was most likely caused by someone in my family "overloading" the wash machine one too many times over 11 years. Guy's / Gal's you can do this and save yourself from buying a new washer for between $850 - $1,200. My repair expense was under $240 including tax and next day delivery of my parts. Thanks Part Select !!!! Neil

washer would not spin to extract vwater
will not go over step by step here as there are already a multitude of stories on site with exact situation as mine who have already done so.. What I will say is that PartSelect is easily the absolutely best site on the net for a complete problem diagnosis to finished repair experience. Just input your model # and describe the problem and you get instant diagnosis probabilities along with access to a long list of customer Q & A and reviews, along with step by step videos on diagnosing, dis- assembling, and re-assembling along with links to all parts needed and also some secondary tips along the way. The prices are fabulous (example: I got a clutch assembly kit with several parts and 2 additional parts as a just in case for $55 shpg incl, while my local appliance parts place wanted $59 plus tax for just the main part in my assembly kit with a no return policy and no part guarantee, plus it was only 1 day more to have PartSelect pkg arrive than I would have gotten part from local store). This site is FABULOUS !!!

Washer would not Agitate or spin out. Also noticed an oil leak.
I followed instructions provided from Parts Select for removing and replacing the coupler assembly, and also instructions for changing the clutch assembly. I also took it's transmission apart (socket set and flat screwdriver required), drained the old oil, cleaned it, added new 90W gear oil. The instructions covered the swapping of parts very well. Cleaning up the oil spill took as long as changing the parts.

When the washer went to spin, first a grinding sound then THUMP, THUMP, THUMP
The washer agitated ok, so I figured it wasn't the motor or agitator. Watching the repair videos, I assumed the clutch might be the culprit. The videos are very good, so I should have taken the machine apart and actually looked at the clutch - it wasn't too bad. Trying to put the new clutch on anyway, I noticed it didn't turn on level. I thought it wasn't seated correct, but it was then I realized the shaft was tilting. This would explain the THUMP, and the grinding must be a gear inside the transmission. As much as I hate to get a new machine, given the tremendous downturn in quality, I think that because this machine is old, it is not worth a $200 transmission. Anyone need a brand new (but test fitted so not returnable) clutch?

So my washer sounds totally normal but the spinning is off and when I take the clothes out they are super drenched. I’m not sure what is wrong since it sounds normal and it is still washing stuff but I’m worried it will get worse. What should we check first??? TIA
PartSelect logo
Hello Sofie, first you should check the motor coupling to make sure it has not broken. If that seems to be in good condition you may have a faulty clutch assembly that needs replacing. Best of luck with this repair!

The clutch in my washer is malfunctioning but I’m not positive. How do I check it? How will I know that is the problem?
PartSelect logo
Hi Ryan, if your tub is not spinning or slipping your clutch may need to be replaced. You can check this by removing the transmission from the unit and inspecting it for visibly damaged parts. I hope this helps!

So I just replaced my clutch assembly and now I have another problem. Earlier today when I was using my washer I heard a loud noise kind of like something ripping and when I was inspecting it I could smell a burning smell. The washer didn’t turn off until I turned it off. What is wrong now. This is so frustrating did my husband install the clutch assembly wrong or is it something new
PartSelect logo
Hello Jacq, by the sounds of things the motor coupler which is found here 285753A is at fault. The coupler is found between the transmission and the motor and will slip to prevent any damage. This could cause a burning smell when it slips. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Our machine stopped spinning and it makes a loud buzzing sound. We tried the washing cycle and the center part does not move and in the drying section of the cycle nothing moves and all we hear is the loud sound wondering what could be causing these issues.

Hello Joel. Thank you for your question. There are a few parts you will want to check. First check the lid switch to make sure its activating. If its not, the unit will not agitate or spin. Also check the Direct Drive Motor Coupling and the Clutch Assembly. I hope this helps!

Had asked a question yesterday, now my wife says that today the spin cycle as well as the agitation cycle are making rather loud noises--coming from down low in the unit. Sounds to me like something is slipping then catching?? i'm leaning toward the clutch or the transmission, but can't decipher which to attempt to replace, there was a small spot of blackish powder underneath the unit when i inspected it the other day too.
For model number rtw4300sqo

Hello Paul, thank you for your question. The most likely cause of this noise, and the slipping is the clutch Part Number: PS334641. There is an installation video and lots of other information on the parts page. You may want to inspect the coupling as well, PartSelect Number: PS1485646. I hope this helps!

Agitates and drains but does not spin. Not spinning sounds like the clutch but wouldn't that also make it not agitate? Thanks in advance.
For model number Whirlpool LSR5232LQO

Hi David, Thank you for your question. If the washer is not spinning, there are some parts that you will need to check to see which ones are causing the issue. You will need to check the direct drive motor coupling, the clutch assembly, the lid switch, the pump and the clutch lining kit. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

Noticed my washer will not spin. If you open the lid rock the drum around it will sometimes spin. Now i’m at the point of it will not spin at all. The coupler seems to be fine. It is kind of lose on the motor side but i cannot even get it off on the transmission side. I’m thinking this kit will solve my problem?

At end of spin cycle, drum clangs loudly. When manually turned, clang occurs at 180 degree turn. Will clutch assembly fix this?
For model number 110-24872300
PartSelect logo
Hello Carolyn, thank you for your question. Yes, The clutch changes the unit from agitation to drain/spin mode and if you hear a bang noise at the end of the cycle this could be the issue. If that part is replaced and the issues persists, we would recommend checking the PartSelect Number: PS11723156 gear case and brake assembly. I hope this helps.

Hello Michael, thank you for your question. We would recommend checking the clutch assembly on the unit. The clutch changes the unit from agitation to drain/spin mode. If that isn't the issue the next part we would recommend is the gearcase. I hope this helps!

My washer makes a loud "cluncking" sound when draining...i replaced the clutch kit, thinking this was the problem, but still makes the loud clunking noise when draining? any other parts i can try?
For model number LSQ9010PG2

Hi Steven, Thank you for your question. If you are hearing a loud clunking sound when the water is draining, then there may be something stuck in the pump causing this and you will need to check it. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!
